Heterogeneous Microstructure And Mechanical Behaviour Of Al-8.3fe-1.3v-1.8si Alloy Produced By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, S. J. Yu, P. Wang, H. C. Li, R. Setchi, M. W. Wu, Z. Y. Liu, Z. W. Chen, S. Waqar, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al-8.3Fe-1.3V-1.8Si alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion is seldom studied. Therefore, fully dense alloys with two parameters were selected to investigate this key issue. The results show that the alloy with low power and scanning speed (S200) shows fan-shell-shaped melt pools and laser tracks while another (S350) shows a deeper and wider melt pool. Both alloys obtain a heterogeneous microstructure without a secondary phase in melt pool (MP) and a nano-sized phase in melt pool boundary (MPB). The difference between solid-solution strengthening and Orowan strengthening in MP and MPB …

Experimental Study On The Mechanical Controlling Factors Of Fracture Plugging Strength For Lost Circulation Control In Shale Gas Reservoir, Chengyuan Xu, Lingmao Zhu, Feng Xu, Yili Kang, Haoran Jing, Zhenjiang You

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The geological conditions of shale reservoir present several unique challenges. These include the extensive development of multi-scale fractures, frequent losses during horizontal drilling, low success rates in plugging, and a tendency for the fracture plugging zone to experience repeated failures. Extensive analysis suggests that the weakening of the mechanical properties of shale fracture surfaces is the primary factor responsible for reducing the bearing capacity of the fracture plugging zone. To assess the influence of oil-based environments on the degradation of mechanical properties in shale fracture surfaces, rigorous mechanical property tests were conducted on shale samples subsequent to their exposure to …

Aging Response And Precipitation Behavior After 5% Pre-Deformation Of An Al-Mg-Si-Cu Alloy, Shuoxun Jin, Tungwai Ngai, Liejun Li, Shian Jia, Tongguang Zhai, Dongjie Ke Aug 2018

Aging Response And Precipitation Behavior After 5% Pre-Deformation Of An Al-Mg-Si-Cu Alloy, Shuoxun Jin, Tungwai Ngai, Liejun Li, Shian Jia, Tongguang Zhai, Dongjie Ke

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, Al-1.00 Mg-0.65 Si-0.24 Cu alloy was solution heat-treated, water-quenched, and then pre-deformed for 5% before aging. The peak hardness and yield strength of the pre-deformed sample with subsequent artificial aging were similar to that of a T6 condition sample. It was also found that the pre-deformation treatment could inhibit the negative influence of natural aging to some degree. After seven days of natural aging, the pre-deformed sample obtained better peak hardness and yield strength upon artificial aging than the sample without pre-deformation. In addition, the pre-deformation treatment could reduce 50% of the artificial aging time to reach …

Mechanical Properties And Flame Retardancy Of Surface Modified Magnesium Oxysulfate (5mg(Oh)2·Mgso4·3h2o) Whisker For Polypropylene Composites, Eui-Su Kim, Ye Chan Kim, Jungwoo Park, Youngjun Kim, Sung-Hoon Kim, Kwang Jin Kim, Jonghwan Suhr, Youngkwan Lee, Seong Hoon Lee, Dae-Sik Kim, Soo-Hyun Kim, Ju-Ho Yun, In-Kyung Park, Jae-Do Nam

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) whisker is considered as a promising inorganic material recently attracting a great attention for being used as a reinforcing filler for polymer composites due to high aspect ratio and extremely-low bulk density. In this study, the MOS was treated with 3-methacryloyloxypropyl-trimethoxy silane (MPS) via sol-gel condensation reactions, which successfully allowed melt mixing with polypropylene (PP) up to 30 wt% of MOS. The tensile strength at yield and modulus of the MOS/PP composites were substantially increased by 50.8% and 362%, respectively, when compared with the pristine PP. As a novel finding, the flame retardancy of MOS was proved …

A Tensile Deformation Model For In-Situ Dendrite/Metallic Glass Matrix Composites, J. W. Qiao, T. Zhang, Fuqian Yang, P. K. Liaw, S. Pauly, B. S. Xu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In-situ dendrite/metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a composition of Ti₄₆Zr₂₀V₁₂Cu₅Be₁₇ exhibit ultimate tensile strength of 1510 MPa and fracture strain of about 7.6%. A tensile deformation model is established, based on the five-stage classification: (1) elastic-elastic, (2) elastic-plastic, (3) plastic-plastic (yield platform), (4) plastic-plastic (work hardening), and (5) plastic-plastic (softening) stages, analogous to the tensile behavior of common carbon steels. The constitutive relations strongly elucidate the tensile deformation mechanism. In parallel, the simulation results by a finite-element method (FEM) are in good agreement with the experimental findings and theoretical calculations. The present study gives a mathematical model to clarify …
