A Prediction Of Interfacial Tension By Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation: A Study On Effects Of Cushion Gas (Co2, N2 And Ch4) For Underground Hydrogen Storage, Quoc T. Doan, Alireza Keshavarz, Caetano R. Miranda, Peter Behrenbruch, Stefan Iglauer

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel consumption have caused global warming and remain challenging problems for mitigation. Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) provides clean fuel and replaces traditional fossil fuels to reduce emissions of CO2. Geological formations such as depleted oil/gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers and shale formations have been recognized as potential targets to inject and store H2 into the subsurface formations for large-scale implementation of CCS and UHS. However, the presence of H2 with cushion gas at different fractions under different geo-storage conditions, which can influence Hydrogen's flow properties, was not investigated widely. Until now, studies of interfacial …

Interfacial Tensions Of (Brine + H2 + Co2) Systems At Gas Geo-Storage Conditions, Zoha Dalal Isfehani, Ali Sheidaie, Mirhasan Hosseini, Jalal Fahimpour, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In hydrogen geological storage, cushion gas has vital role to retain adequate reservoir pressure to keep the hydrogen withdrawal stable. Presence of the cushion gas in the storage reservoir can affect the flow characteristics of hydrogen during injection and production cycles. One of the most crucial parameters that control the fluids flow in porous media is interfacial tension (IFT) between fluids. However, the literature data lacks in terms of IFT between cushion gas mixed with hydrogen and brine at geo-storage conditions. In this study, the pendant drop method was used to measure the IFT of (brine + H2 + …

A Review Of Hydrogen/Rock/Brine Interaction: Implications For Hydrogen Geo-Storage, Masoud Aslannezhad, Muhammad Ali, Azim Kalantariasl, Mohammad Sayyafzadeh, Zhenjiang You, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hydrogen (H2) is currently considered a clean fuel to decrease anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and will play a vital role in climate change mitigation. Nevertheless, one of the primary challenges of achieving a complete H2 economy is the large-scale storage of H2, which is unsafe on the surface because H2 is highly compressible, volatile, and flammable. Hydrogen storage in geological formations could be a potential solution to this problem because of the abundance of such formations and their high storage capacities. Wettability plays a critical role in the displacement of formation water and determines …

Using Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles In A Magnetic Field To Enhance Oil Production From Oil-Wet Carbonate Reservoirs, F. Amrouche, M. J. Blunt, Stefan Iglauer, M. Short, T. Crosbie, E. Cordero, D. Xu Jan 2023

Using Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles In A Magnetic Field To Enhance Oil Production From Oil-Wet Carbonate Reservoirs, F. Amrouche, M. J. Blunt, Stefan Iglauer, M. Short, T. Crosbie, E. Cordero, D. Xu

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Enhanced oil production can maximise yield from depleted reservoirs, and in the face of dwindling global oil reserves can reduce the need for exploratory drilling during the transition away from fossil fuels. A hybrid technique, merging a magnetic field (MF) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles (NPs), was investigated as a potential method of enhancing oil production from oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. The impact of this hybrid technique on rock wettability, zeta potential, and interfacial tension was also investigated. Displacement experiments were carried out on oil-wet Austin chalk – a laboratory carbonate rock analogue – using MgO NPs in deionized water (DW) …

Morphology Of Mos2 Nanosheets And Its Influence On Water/Oil Interfacial Tension: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Yang Feng, Jirui Hou, Yulong Yang, Shuting Wang, Dongsen Wang, Tingting Cheng, Zhenjiang You

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Plate-shaped nanoparticles exhibit huge potential for a broad range of cutting-edge applications in interfacial-based science and technology, such as enhanced oil recovery in hydrocarbon reservoirs, owing to their remarkable features in superior affinity toward interfaces. Understanding the adsorption behavior of nanosheets (NSs) self-assembled at the water/oil interface (W/O interface) is crucial to elucidate the variation of interfacial tension (IFT) and establish special design criteria for efficient industrial use of NSs. Here we present a molecular dynamics study to reveal the morphology of carbon-chain modified molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets. The stress exerted on a nanosheet is analyzed. The simulation …
