In this study, the design and construction of an extrusion equipment with spinning fiber devices has been developed to produce polyester fiber from virgin and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Several operating parameters (i.e., pressure, temperature, feed flow rate, extrusion speed and extruder design) have been analyzed to identify the best process conditions. In particular, this study has focused on a detailed analysis for the processing of recycled raw material for polyester textile fiber applications considering the variability of the process and identifying alternatives to minimize the impact on the quality parameters such as the fiber diameter and mechanical specifications. The …

A Note On An Extended Short-Cut Method For The Design Of Multicomponent Reactive Distillation Columns, Marcelino Carrera-Rodriguez, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernandez, Hector Hernandez-Escoto, Salvador Hernandez, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Until now, few studies have proposed analytical short-cut methods for reliably designing multicomponent reactive distillation columns. Therefore, in this study we have improved and extended a design methodology for the design of RD columns of multicomponent systems. We have developed a graphical design method, based on distillation lines and tray-by-tray calculations defined in terms of reaction-invariant composition variables, to determine RD design parameters such as the number of theoretical stages, operating reflux ratio, the feed tray location and the top or bottom flow. In this note, we report our extended and improved method, which is analytical and useful for reliably …

Effect Of Using Adjusted Parameters, Local And Global Optimums, For Phase Equilibrium Prediction On The Synthesis Of Azeotropic Distillation Columns, Claudia Gutierrez-Antonio, Andrea Ojeda-Gasca, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Abel Briones-Ramírez

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

We analyze the effect of using adjusted parameters, corresponding to local and global optimums, in the NRTL thermodynamic model on the complete process synthesis (design, optimization and control) of homogeneous azeotropic distillation columns. The adjusted parameters that corresponding to a global optimum were obtained with simulated annealing technique, while the adjusted parameters that corresponding to a local optimum were taken from Dechema Collection. Both sets of parameters were used to design a conventional sequence, a side-stream column and a Petlyuk sequence. These designs were used as initial solution to a multiobjective genetic algorithm with constraints handling, coupled to a processes …

Phase Stability Analysis And Phase Equilibrium Calculations In Reactive And Non-Reactive Systems Using Charged System Search Algorithms, Ahmed O. Elnabawy, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Stochastic global optimization algorithms have shown promise in providing reliable and efficient solutions for phase stability and phase equilibrium problems in reactive and non-reactive systems. A special class of stochastic methods is Swarm Intelligence, in which search agents are allowed to interact with each other and with their environment, and benefit from their peers in their collective pursuit for the global minimum, resulting in an intelligent behavior unknown to the individual agents. Of special interest are swarm intelligence methods with less tunable algorithm parameters, which allow for easy and user-friendly implementation. In particular, this study introduces the Charged System Search, …

Preparation, Characterization And Analyses Of Carbons With Natural And Induced Calcium Compounds For The Adsorption Of Fluoride, Luis A. Ramirez-Montoya, Virginia Hernandez-Montoya, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Miguel A. Montes-Moran, Rigoberto Tovar-Gomez, Ma. Del Rosario Moreno-Virgen

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

A comparative study of fluoride removal has been made using samples of carbons obtained from single carbonization from pecan nut shells and plum kernels and carbons obtained by impregnation of these wastes, prior to their carbonization, with a calcium acetate solution. The impregnation step was determinant for increasing the ability of carbons to remove fluoride anions from water of carbons prepared from both precursors. The intrinsic calcium content of the precursors left a footprint in the process, with carbons prepared from the higher calcium content precursor (i.e., pecan nut shells) always performing better than the plum kernel carbon counterpart. Outstanding …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

The search for reliable and efficient global optimization algorithms for solving phase stability and phase equilibrium problems in applied thermodynamics is an ongoing area of research. In this study, we evaluate and compare the reliability and efficiency of eight selected nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms for solving difficult phase stability and phase equilibrium problems. These algorithms are the Cuckoo Search (CS), Intelligent Firefly (IFA), Bat (BA), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Monkey and Krill Herd Hybrid (MAKHA), Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMAES), Magnetic Charged System Search (MCSS) and Bare Bones Particle Swarm Optimization (BBPSO). The results clearly show that CS is the …

Unconstrained Gibbs Free Energy Minimization For Phase Equilibrium Calculations In Non-Reactive Systems Using An Improved Cuckoo Search Algorithm, Seif E.K. Fateen, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

This study introduces a strategy to improve the effectiveness of Cuckoo Search algorithm for the unconstrained Gibbs free energy minimization in phase equilibrium calculations of non-reactive systems. Specifically, the gradient information of the unconstrained Gibbs free energy function, which is readily available, is used to enhance the balance between diversification and intensification stages of Cuckoo Search algorithm for phase split calculations in multicomponent systems. The results showed that it is feasible to improve the numerical performance of the Cuckoo Search algorithm using the gradient information of the Gibbs free energy function; this improved method provides better results for phase equilibrium …

A Note On Effective Phase Stability Calculations Using A Gradient-Based Cuckoo Search Algorithm, Seif E.K. Fateen, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Stochastic global optimization methods have been successfully used to perform phase stability calculations. However, these methods may show some drawbacks in challenging phase stability problems. In this study, we made use of the gradient of the tangent plane distance function to improve the performance of Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm, which is a promising nature-inspired stochastic global optimization method, for the calculation of phase stability analysis. The new modified algorithm, Gradient-Based Cuckoo Search (GBCS), was evaluated for solving several challenging phase stability problems. Its performance at different numerical effort levels and the effect of stopping criterion have been analyzed. GBCS was …

Multiobjective Optimization Of A Hydrodesulfurization Process Of Diesel Using Distillation With Side Reactor, Erick Miranda-Galindo, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernandez, Salvador Hernandez, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

The distillation with side reactor has been proposed to remove sulfur compounds of diesel. The design and optimization of a hydrodesulfurization process involve the selection of the configuration and the operating conditions to minimize the total annual cost, CO2 emissions and the amount of sulfur compounds. In general, the optimal design of hydrodesulfurization process is a non-linear and multivariable multiobjective optimization problem, with the presence of both continuous and discrete design variables. In particular, stochastic multi-objective optimization algorithms are capable of solving, robustly and efficiently, challenging optimization problems, and they appear to be a suitable alternative for the design and …
