Movement and position of the limbs of the human body are controlled by the interaction between the muscle and the peripheral and central nervous system. This interaction is nothing but the neural signals. Neural signals are electrical in nature and referred as action potentials. An EMG is a summation of action potentials from the muscle fibers under the electrode placed on the skin. Thus it is easy to estimate the nature and timing of the movement from the firing of an EMG signal.
