Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the process in which organic matter is fermented in an oxygen-deprived environment to produce renewable biogas. Our project is multi-faceted, with the overall goal of raising public awareness of AD as a transitional energy source. To that end, our group has named itself Undergraduates Raising Awareness for Anaerobic Digestion (URAAD). We are approaching this goal on three fronts, including (i) a website, (ii) a physical lab-scale digester, and (iii) a computer simulation of anaerobic digestion.
The first component, the website, was developed with the aim of serving as a resource for the public. It includes educational …
Improved Fermentation Design And Screening Devices For Biobutanol Production, Garret Christopher Munch
Improved Fermentation Design And Screening Devices For Biobutanol Production, Garret Christopher Munch
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A worldwide increase in demand for renewable fuels has revived interest in fermentatively produced butanol. However, butanol fermentation suffers from low product yields and productivity. The work presented in this thesis addresses part of these research and development needs at three levels: innovative fermentation process design; genetic manipulation for strain enhancement; and the development of a new tool for anaerobic process characterization and optimization.
Product yield could be increased through traditional fermentation engineering. Co-fermentation of butyric acid with glycerol increased the butanol yield from 0.45 mol/mol (mols C in butanol / mol C in substrates) to 0.51 mol/mol. In building …
Biomethane Production From Distillery Wastewater, Zachary Christman
Biomethane Production From Distillery Wastewater, Zachary Christman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Distillery wastewater treatment is a great ecological problem, for example, India produces 2.7 billion liters of alcohol that results in 40 billion liters of wastewater. However, this material can be seen as a resource since 11 million cubic meters of biogas at 60% methane could be produced in addition to cleaning the water. The distillery has two options of what to do with the biogas. The first is to use the biogas to fuel the distillery making the production plant more energy efficient and removing some of the need to buy natural gas. The other is to upgrade the biogas …

Pilot plant studies of sequential batch reactor (SBR) cycles revealed the role of selector phase biology (SPB) involved in COD removal, nitrification, denitrification and total phosphate removal. The phases namely anoxic, anaerobic and aerobic in single tank reactor design of SBR were showed effective biological nutrient removal (BNR) > 90% on average in 4 h designed cycle time with 12 h of hydraulic retention time (HRT). The phases were 2 h fill which includes 1 h simultaneous fill and aeration, 1 h settle and 1 h decant. This cycle design found effective to create selective environment for microbes to carry biological …

Digestion Of Sand-Laden Manure Slurry In An Upflow Anaerobic Solids Removal (Uasr) Digester, Khursheed Karim, Rebecca Hoffmann, M. (Muthanna) H. Al-Dahhan
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Studies on the Performance of a Laboratory Scale Up flow Anaerobic Solids Removal (UASR) Digester Were Carried Out using Sand-Laden Cow Manure Slurries Having Total Solids (TS) Concentration as 50 and 100 G/l. Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) Was Maintained as 32.4 Days, Which Resulted in the Volatile Solids (VS) Loading Rates of 1 and 1.64 G/l D. the UASR System Was Designed to Remove Sand from the Manure Slurry, While Anaerobically Digesting Biodegradable Solids Inside a Single Reactor. to Enhance the Contact of Microorganisms and Substrate, the Liquor from the Top of the Digester Was Recirculated through the Bed of …

Anaerobic Digestion Kinetics Study of Cow Manure Was Performed at 35°C in Bench-Scale Gas-Lift Digesters (3.78 L Working Volume) at Eight Different Volatile Solids (VS) Loading Rates in the Range of 1.11-5.87 G L-1 Day-1. the Digesters Produced Methane at the Rates of 0.44-1.18 L L-1 Day-1, and the Methane Content of the Biogas Was Found to Increase with Longer Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT). based on the Experimental Observations, the Ultimate Methane Yield and the Specific Methane Productivity Were Estimated to Be 0.42 L CH4 (G vs. Loaded)-1 and 0.45 L CH …
