Interplay Of Quantum Size Effect, Anisotropy And Surface Stress Shapes The Instability Of Thin Metal Films, Mikhail Khenner Aug 2017

Interplay Of Quantum Size Effect, Anisotropy And Surface Stress Shapes The Instability Of Thin Metal Films, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Morphological instability of a planar surface ([111], [011], or [001]) of an ultra-thin metal film is studied in a parameter space formed by three major effects (the quantum size effect, the surface energy anisotropy and the surface stress) that influence a film dewetting. The analysis is based on the extended Mullins equation, where the effects are cast as functions of the film thickness. The formulation of the quantum size effect (Z. Zhang et al., PRL 80, 5381 (1998)) includes the oscillation of the surface energy with thickness caused by electrons confinement. By systematically comparing the effects, their contributions into the …

Scalable And Fully Distributed Localization In Large-Scale Sensor Networks, Miao Jin, Su Xia, Hongyi Wu, Xianfeng David Gu Jun 2017

Scalable And Fully Distributed Localization In Large-Scale Sensor Networks, Miao Jin, Su Xia, Hongyi Wu, Xianfeng David Gu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This work proposes a novel connectivity-based localization algorithm, well suitable for large-scale sensor networks with complex shapes and a non-uniform nodal distribution. In contrast to current state-of-the-art connectivity-based localization methods, the proposed algorithm is highly scalable with linear computation and communication costs with respect to the size of the network; and fully distributed where each node only needs the information of its neighbors without cumbersome partitioning and merging process. The algorithm is theoretically guaranteed and numerically stable. Moreover, the algorithm can be readily extended to the localization of networks with a one-hop transmission range distance measurement, and the propagation of …

Measuring The Reflection Matrix Of A Rough Surface, Kenneth W. Burgi, Michael A. Marciniak, Mark E. Oxley, Stephen E. Nauyoks May 2017

Measuring The Reflection Matrix Of A Rough Surface, Kenneth W. Burgi, Michael A. Marciniak, Mark E. Oxley, Stephen E. Nauyoks

Faculty Publications

Phase modulation methods for imaging around corners with reflectively scattered light required illumination of the occluded scene with a light source either in the scene or with direct line of sight to the scene. The RM (reflection matrix) allows control and refocusing of light after reflection, which could provide a means of illuminating an occluded scene without access or line of sight. Two optical arrangements, one focal-plane, the other an imaging system, were used to measure the RM of five different rough-surface reflectors. Intensity enhancement values of up to 24 were achieved. Surface roughness, correlation length, and slope were examined …

Shear Driven Micro-Fluidic Pump For Cardiovascular Applications, Nihad E. Daidzic Apr 2017

Shear Driven Micro-Fluidic Pump For Cardiovascular Applications, Nihad E. Daidzic

Aviation Department Publications

A valveless shear-driven micro-fluidic pump design (SDMFP) for hemodynamic applications is presented in this work. One of the possible medical and biomedical applications is in-vivo hemodynamic (human blood circulation) support/assist. One or more SDMFPs can be inserted/implanted into vascular lumens in a form of a stent/duct in series and/or in parallel (bypass duct) to support blood circulation in-vivo. A comprehensive review of various micro-pump designs up to about mid 2000’s is given in [1,2]. Many of micropump designs considered are not suitable for in-vivo or even in-vitro medical/biomedical applications.

Operating principles, design, and SDMFP features are given in [3]. A …

On A Time Domain Boundary Integral Equation Formulation For Acoustic Scattering By Rigid Bodies In Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark Jan 2017

On A Time Domain Boundary Integral Equation Formulation For Acoustic Scattering By Rigid Bodies In Uniform Mean Flow, Fang Q. Hu, Michelle E. Pizzo, Douglas M. Nark

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

It has been well-known that under the assumption of a uniform mean flow, the acoustic wave propagation equation can be formulated as a boundary integral equation. However, the constant mean flow assumption, while convenient for formulating the integral equation, does not satisfy the solid wall boundary condition wherever the body surface is not aligned with the assumed uniform flow. A customary boundary condition for rigid surfaces is that the normal acoustic velocity be zero. In this paper, a careful study of the acoustic energy conservation equation is presented that shows such a boundary condition would in fact lead to source …

High Performance Techniques Applied In Partial Differential Equations Library, Shilei Lin Jan 2017

High Performance Techniques Applied In Partial Differential Equations Library, Shilei Lin

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

This thesis explores various Trilinos packages to determine a method for updating the deal.ii library, which specializes in solving partial differential equations by finite element methods. It begins with introducing related concepts and general goals, followed by exploring computational and mathematical methods which are analytical solutions of one-dimensional Boussinesq equations and developing newer prototypes for solvers in deal.ii based on Trilinos packages. After demonstrating the methods, it indicates the reducing solving time in newer prototypes. Based on results from the prototype, similar methods are applied to update the deal.ii library. In the end, a testing program is exploited to demonstrate …
