This week we are featuring Dr. Jose Torres, the president of Aurora-based Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Torres was superintendent of Elgin Area School District U-46 from 2008 to 2014 and has served in various leadership roles, including regional superintendent/area instruction officer in Chicago Public Schools, and as the only superintendent on the Federal Equity and Excellence Commission of the United States Department of Education. Torres was one of three educators nationwide to receive the 2014 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award from the AASA, the school superintendents association.

In this conceptual paper, Western scholarship from both within and beyond the field is reviewed, and theory is provided to support practical authentic pedagogical applications useful in the development of school leaders. A transformative professional learning experience fosters reflective practice and processes that elaborate and clarify core professional ideas, experiences, and questions within the personal and professional contexts of school leadership. This survey research studied integration and innovation in early childhood education and implications for quality teacher preparation. The study was a descriptive survey research, with one hundred and twelve (112) sampled preschool teacher. Eight research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. Early Childhood Programme Instrument on Integration and Innovation (ECPAI) was constructed, validated and used in eliciting responses from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using percentage, mean, and Paired Sample tests. The study revealed a significant difference in the opinions of public and private preschool teachers toward integration and innovative practices in early childhood education in Nigeria. …

The purpose of the study was to find out factors affecting active community participation in adult literacy and non-formal education programmes in Anambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The design was descriptive involving 475 respondents selected from participants in the UNICEF assisted adult literacy and non formal education programme through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a 27 item questionnaire. Mean scores were used in answering the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.5 level of significance. This article reports findings to promote the best practices of a transformative teaching and learning environment from a case study of a year long, full immersion Secondary Level Professional Development School. The results support the idea that interns have a significant stake, active professional community commitment and a heightened awareness during their training and prior to employment. As a result of the full immersion PDS experience, there is a significant transformational impact in their personal and professional grounding as future career educators. Best practices for the promotion of authentic teacher preparation are discussed.

This paper establishes the place of language and graffiti practiced by exceptional individuals in the interpretation of family values, the preservation of culture and traditional heritage of the Igbo community in Southeastern Nigeria. Participatory decision-making and teachers’ morale are positively and significantly correlated in public secondary schools in Zamboanga City, Philippines. Public secondary school teachers in Zamboanga City have High Morale in their work performance as teachers. This is evident in decision-making processes and activities regarding high school students with disciplinary problems, selection of the honor students, planning of the yearly In-Service Training for Teachers (INSET), preparation of the calendar of activities and conduct of remedial classes for slow learners.

The study using focus groups in the West African nation of The Gambia was an experiential research, which provided viable data on girl child education practices, problems and prospects in the African sub region. This paper presents an opportunity to explore peoples’ perceptions on issues of interest and concern to Gambians on girl child education. The 2006-2007 study was conducted through the use of focus groups for data collection, covering six educational regions in the Republic of The Gambia.
