In a typical African community, women age gracefully, as they bear children, care, train, provide natural support; as well as receive support from their children when they grow older. Without early intervention, at-risk students are in danger of not completing high school, of being unemployed, and of becoming involved with the legal system as a truant or by criminal acts. This study examined differences between a multicomponent school-based mental health (SBMH) intervention and a single-component SBMH intervention in terms of the locus of control (LOC), academic performance (GPA), and number of behavior referrals by school staff for a sample of at-risk youth. This study drew from social learning theory, LOC theory, and the theories underlying cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and social skills training (SST) for its conceptual framework. A …

Presented here are the results of two family-focused informational events that were designed to connect families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) with key support resources in their communities. The ultimate goal of these efforts was to determine the most effective formats for providing informational and emotional supports for families. Overall, families reported benefit from both events. Families noted informational support being most greatly appreciated across both events--weekend camp vs. day-long. While families noted that emotional support was most appreciated during the weekend camp.

The authors explored frequently cited articles across four peer-reviewed journals in early intervention (EI) and early childhood special education (ECSE). The Social Science Citation Index was used to examine journal articles from 1994 to 2005 in: Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Infants and Young Children, Journal of Early Intervention, and Topics in Early Childhood Special Education. Results for the most frequently cited EI/ECSE journal articles are reported.

The Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA) requires that states receiving federal funds provide a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) to students with disabilities. Failing to provide a FAPE is discriminatory under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Rehabilitations Act (RA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The IDEA provides remedies to correct inadequacies with compensatory but does not provide compensatory damages. Parents dissatisfied with the adequacy of the education of a child with special needs have tried to bypass this, using §1983 to seek damages for an inadequate education under the IDEA and under the …

Epidemiological studies indicate a progressively rising prevalence trend for ASD over the past decade. Yet, compared to population estimates, identification rates have not kept pace in our schools. Many children with ASD are overlooked, misdiagnosed with another psychiatric condition, or present with coexisting psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. School psychologists must be prepared to recognize the presence of risk factors and/or early warning signs of ASD, engage in case finding, and be familiar with screening and assessment tools in order to ensure that students are being identified and …

An Examination Of Hand-Held Computer-Assisted Instruction On Subtraction Skills For Second Grade Students With Learning And Behavioral Disabilities, Philip D. Nordness Dr., Ann Haverkost, Annette Volberding

The effect of a mathematic flashcard application on a hand-held computing device was examined across three individual second grade students with learning and behavioral disabilities. All of the students improved their subtraction scores by an average of 17% as measured by the district-created, curriculum-based assessment. The results of this study suggest that practice on a mobile computing device with a mathematic flashcard application can improve subtraction skills in second grade students with disabilities.

A Meta-Analysis Of Peer-Mediated Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jie Zhang, John J. Wheeler

This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of peer-mediated interventions for promoting social interactions among children from birth to eight years of age diagnosed with ASD. Forty-five single-subject design studies were analyzed and the effect sizes were calculated by the regression model developed by Allison and Gorman (1993). The overall effect sizes suggest that peer-mediated interventions were highly effective. Further categorical comparisons suggest that these interventions were more effective in enhancing social responses in younger boys, when older male siblings served as interventionists, when the interventions took place in the home, when peer modeling was used, and when consideration was given to …

Teachers are frequently involved in developing and evaluating treatments for problematic behaviors. Along with other members of the interdisciplinary team, they must determine the level of intrusiveness that a treatment may have on a student. Several factors that influence the intrusiveness of treatment procedures are described. These factors were used to develop a checklist that could be used systematically by teachers to evaluate the intrusiveness of treatments recommended by treatment teams.
