In 1998, a groundbreaking medical research study was published that created widespread interest in what researchers were calling adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Felitti et al.’s (1998) research highlighted the prevalence of adverse incidents and the correlation with future health morbidity. The study established that more than 50% of adults in the study experienced at least one traumatic event during childhood, allowing the research to become a powerful tool to identify and intervene with children. This starred paper is a review of literature that examines qualitative and quantitative studies conducted to explain the relationship between childhood adversity, childhood development, and externalizing behaviors. Additionally, this literature review further examines the impact of childhood adversity and trauma on student learning, teacher efficacy, and the need for trauma-sensitive school systems.

Although many interventions and treatment options are available to aid youth who display patterns of emotional or behavioral dysfunction as a result of trauma, researchers are discovering the effectiveness of “mindfulness” techniques to help young people cope with these symptoms. Mindfulness is the ability to experience the present moment without judgement and the techniques involve training in attending to present-moment experiences such as breath, sounds, and movements (Berceli & Napoli, 2007).
