A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy Dec 2000

A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Knowing this, music can become an indispensable part of outdoor education programs because music summons the basic connections that sustain human life: our fellow humans and the planet Earth. Recognizing nature as the point of origin for sounds in music is to truly touch the roots of music. Recognizing music as a form of communication for humans is to touch the roots of culture. Thus, we have a triad of influences among people, nature and music. This triad is worth exploring in outdoor education programs because of what it can teach participants about themselves and about their world.

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

This issue of Taproot launches a two-part series about music and outdoor education. It is sad, but true, that many outdoor programs include little or no music learning opportunities for participants. Music is relegated to the realm of campfire singing for the most part and hence, an important avenue to fostering environmental consciousness is lost. Byron wrote of music played without end by the natural world:

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Sensational journalism, dramatic music, real science, and vivid computer animation lead the viewer on a journey across a world of cultures. At each stop one is compelled to feel compassion for the citizens of the far away region, and for those in our own highly developed nation. Although technologically advanced, the US is not immune to the same ecological, political, and racial predicaments. The narrator illuminates this immunity using rhetoric laced with American pride.

There is a sound that is foreign to this place. I would guess a locomotive. A train in the distance? No, it's the voice of my heart rushing hot red life through my body as it comes closer. She knows I'm here. She passes 10 feet from me. The Lion can hear me breathe.

From Romanticism To Deep Ecology: The Continuing Evolution In American Environmental Thought, David Ackerson Dec 2000

From Romanticism To Deep Ecology: The Continuing Evolution In American Environmental Thought, David Ackerson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Nash argues that compared to the millennia of anti-wilderness sentiment. the pace of intellectual change in the previous two centuries is so rapid that it must be considered revolutionary (1982 P. XI). Viewed in the context of human hi story and human attitudes, this is true. However, the actual development of a pro-wilderness viewpoint in America has followed an evolutionary course from the Romantic Movement through Emerson, Thoreau, Muir, and Leopold. The latest, logical manifestation of this evolutionary progress is the philosophy known as deep ecology.

Early Beginnings In Outdoor Education, Julie A. Carlson Jun 2000

Early Beginnings In Outdoor Education, Julie A. Carlson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The year 2000, then, marks the 70th anniversary of outdoor education, and represents an appropriate time to revisit some of its early beginnings in the United States. Outdoor education today has mixed and melded with other outdoor and experientially related approaches to learning. It is believed that knowledge of the historical roots of outdoor education, and identification of the paths it has taken to arrive where it is today, can help educators in broadening their understanding of relationships between various approaches to pedagogy.

John Ruskin A Lesser Known- Environmentalist, Van Akin Burd

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The Centennial of the death of the English writer, John Ruskin (1819-1900), is being observed this year in numerous exhibitions and conferences in England, the United States, Italy, Japan. These celebrations are testimony to his gifts as a painter, his enduring influence as an art and social critic, and his warnings as an environmentalist. During his lifetime, the Victorians knew him primarily as a writer on art and architecture-The Stones of Venice (1851-1853) leading to a rediscovery of the beauty of Venice and early Italian painters like Giotto, and such successors as Tintoretto and Botticelli. In recent years we have …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

For history to be truly understood more than reporting facts about past events must occur. The significance of events to people must also be described. Hence, our lead story "Early Beginnings in Outdoor Education" by Julie Carlson provides a good summary of outdoor education history. Her scholarly approach outlines the progress of the movement from 1930 to the present. Carlson's careful documentation furnishes good suggestions for those who would read more deeply.

Leaming From An Outdoor Education Hero, Clifford Knapp

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Curiosity seized me and when L.B. paused, I raised my hand and asked, "What's that bird?" L. B. thought for a moment and then replied, "I don't know: why don't you go and find out?" His response was surprising because I thought he would give the bird's name and want me to stay for the rest of his lecture. I blurted out, "Do you mean right now?" He said "Yes, right now, before the bird flies away". Somewhat reluctantly, I left the group and eventually discovered the mystery bird was a yellow-billed cuckoo. Now I realize that L.B. knew the …
