A variety of initiatives are driving online and blended learning in each of Canada’s provinces and territories. From teachers’ unions in Nova Scotia fighting to ensure online learning is an accepted method of educational delivery, to Ontario’s College of Teachers creating an e-learning endorsement for teachers or the British Columbia government creating policies to expand the growth and opportunities online learning provides, there are multiple, isolated initiatives happening across the country.
State of the Nation: K-12 Online Learning in Canada is now in its fourth year of publication and can be seen as a national guide for understanding the field …

Research On The Historical And Philosophical Foundations Of Andragogy: Expanding Horizons And Deepening The Search In 2011, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
This paper on the History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited [with a few exceptions] to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, present aspects of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts in which they appeared in published form. This will not be an exact history of the events and philosophy as they appear in chronological order. But, this will be presented in the general sequence of the years that …

A Living Lecture For Lifelong Learning, John A. Henschke Edd
A Living Lecture For Lifelong Learning, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
The author is seeking to improve the lecture, by adding numerous techniques with it to engage the learners more actively in the learning process, supporting it with the theories of large group meetings and andragogy, and naming it ‘a living lecture for lifelong learning’. The process of the living lecture for lifelong learning is described as follows. Before the presentation/lecture, which the leader has prepared on a predetermined topic prior to the time of its audible delivery, the audience may be divided into four teams and be asked to serve as listening teams. Each team respectively, listens to a five …
Organizational Learning And Employee Retention: A Focus Study Examining The Role Of Relationships Between Supervisors And Subordinates, John A. Henschke Edd
Organizational Learning And Employee Retention: A Focus Study Examining The Role Of Relationships Between Supervisors And Subordinates, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
Focusing on the relationship between supervisors and subordinates, the purpose of this research was to study the causal relationship among seven exogenous variables (Supervisor empathy with subordinates, Supervisor trust of subordinates, Planning and delivery of instruction, Accommodating subordinate uniqueness, Supervisor insensitivity toward subordinates, Subordinate-centered learning process, and Supervisor-centered learning process) and two endogenous variables (Employee’s job satisfaction and Employee’s intention to remain in the company). The study was based on the belief that the seven factors, which were beliefs, feelings, and behaviors of supervisors in helping adults learn, based on andragogical principles of learning, are not only methods to help …
Andragogy And Transformative Learning: Imigration Meets Ratioalism In College Classrooms, John A. Henschke Edd
Andragogy And Transformative Learning: Imigration Meets Ratioalism In College Classrooms, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
Although Andragogy and Transformative learning (TL) are highly prized concepts in Adult Education, many scholars are critical of their principles and often confusing strategies. While educators immerse themselves quite successfully in the nuances of theory, they remain puzzled over how to apply them in the classroom. A robust and dynamic approach that can capture the meaningfulness of these ageless paradigms is greatly needed. Therefore in this session we will identify some of the illusive elements that obfuscate the application of Andragogy and TL in university classrooms – undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral.

Asynchronous And Synchronous Teaching And Learning In High-School Distance Education, Elizabeth Murphy, Maria A. Rodríguez-Manzanares, Michael K. Barbour
Education Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of an inductive, interpretive analysis of the perspectives of 42 Canadian high school distance education (DE) teachers on asynchronous and synchronous online teaching. The paper includes a conceptual overview of the affordances and constraints of each form of teaching. Findings provided insight into the following aspects of asynchronous and synchronous online teaching: degree of use; the tools used; the contexts in which each occur; students’ preferences; and limitations. Pedagogy emerged as more important than media for both asynchronous and synchronous online teaching. Synchronous online teaching relied on teacher- rather than student-centred approaches. Asynchronous online teaching …
Asynchronous Use Of Engineering (Materials) Education Videos, Craig Johnson, Arthur D. Morken
Asynchronous Use Of Engineering (Materials) Education Videos, Craig Johnson, Arthur D. Morken
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Engineering education delivery is dynamic and increasingly asynchronous. An observation that students had very different levels of knowledge and skills as they progressed through our programs, led the authors to use audio/visual media as a leveling intervention. In this effort the authors collected data to determine if audio/visual media can be used to increase performance in the development of a program related task and guide students to higher levels of learning on Blooms Taxonomy through the development of student created learning aids.
One specific need was reflected in the disparate skills of our majority component of ‘transfer’ students in our …
Strictly Business: Teacher Perceptions Of Interaction In Virtual Schooling, Abigail Hawkins, Michael K. Barbour, Charles R. Graham
Strictly Business: Teacher Perceptions Of Interaction In Virtual Schooling, Abigail Hawkins, Michael K. Barbour, Charles R. Graham
Education Faculty Publications
This study explored the nature of teacher-student interaction from the perspective of eight virtual school teachers in an asynchronous, self-paced, statewide, supplemental virtual high school. Teacher interviews revealed the majority of interactions were student-initiated and instructional in nature. The main procedural interactions focused on notifications sent to inactive students. Social interactions were minimal and viewed as having little pedagogical value. Institutional barriers such as class size and an absence of effective tracking mechanisms limited the amount and types of interaction teachers engaged in. Study implications and future research are discussed.

Generating Predictive Models Of Learner Community Dynamics, C. Teplovs, N. Fujita, R. Vatrapu
Office of Open Learning Publications
In this paper we present a framework for learner modelling that combines latent semantic analysis and social network analysis of online discourse. The framework is supported by newly developed software, known as the Knowledge, Interaction, and Social Student Modelling Explorer (KISSME), that employs highly interactive visualizations of content-aware interactions among learners. Our goal is to develop, use and refine KISSME to generate and test predictive models of learner interactions to optimise learning.

The Complex And Motivating Factors That Affect Faculty Adoption Of Online Teaching, Scott Ragsdale Ph.D.
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Online program administrators in higher education face a difficult task in convincing faculty to adopt the role of an online teacher. Studies have discovered several issues within the realm of online teaching that are discouraging to potential adopters and prevent many of them from desiring to be involved in online education. On a positive note, research has uncovered several encouraging factors that could motivate faculty to participate. Administrators need to be informed of the negative and positive aspects that cause faculty to either “buy-in” or “opt-out.” Becoming aware of these issues enables online program leaders to develop better faculty recruitment …

The Promise And The Reality: Exploring The Research On Virtual Schooling, Michael K. Barbour
Education Faculty Publications
The first web-based distance education programs at the K-12 began in the early 1990s. Unlike distance education and online learning in general, much less is known about virtual schooling – even less of which is based on systematic research. What is known is often based solely on practitioner experiences. Regardless, the growth and practice of virtual schooling has far outpaced the production of reliable and valid research. This paper will focus upon describing the evolution of K-12 online learning in Canada and the United States, how that evolution has impacted rural schools, and what lessons can be learned from the …
