Decolonizing Raciolinguistic Ideologies In Institutions Of Higher Learning, Chantelle M. August-Mowers, Samantha M. Hoffman

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

This article examines how raciolinguistic ideologies shape global higher education (HE), highlighting the intersection of language, race, and systemic inequalities. English often functions as a gatekeeper, privileging certain knowledge systems while marginalizing students and faculty from the Global South (Flores & Rosa, 2015; Pennycook, 2007). Structural inequities persist in faculty recruitment, international student selection, and academic publishing, reflecting colonial legacies and epistemic injustice (Canagarajah, 2013; Quijano, 2000). Racialized and linguistically marginalized students experience exclusion, microaggressions, and limited mobility, revealing contradictions between diversity rhetoric and institutional practices (Sekaja, 2022; Enslin, 2024). Within the framework of a globalized university campus, this study investigates the process that an international student goes through while adapting to a new culture. Using autoethnography and archival research methods, this study recounts the personal and lived experiences of a doctoral international student navigating the cultural adjustment contexts of a southeastern public university, providing an understanding of how the challenges and opportunities faced by international students are historicized and located within a broader cultural and social context. In the quest for higher education internationalization approaches, there remains much debate about how to redefine “internationalization” in a post-pandemic context through which the limitations of student mobility have been exposed. This article contributes to current debates about future directions and definitions of internationalization by offering insightful analysis of recent approaches and conceptualizations across the Australian university sector. To do so, we conducted a desktop review of universities’ public-facing international strategies and analyzed the documents for patterns in practices and priorities. Discussions of what internationalization means and why it is regarded as important need further conceptualization in a higher education context. This is the first longitudinal autoethnography to discuss the meaning of internationalization. The present study makes noteworthy contributions to international higher education literature and practice. Intercultural Interactions And Transcultural Competence In The Internationalized Classroom: A Mixed-Method Case Study, Andreana Pastena

This study explores the relationship between intercultural interactions and the development of Transcultural Competence among first-year local and international undergraduates in a multi-dimensionally internationalized classroom at a university in Catalonia, Spain. Transcultural Competence accounts for cognitive, affective, linguistic, and identity dimensions within intercultural settings. It adopts a mixed-method approach, including three Transcultural Competence questionnaires, a contact generator, and individual interviews. Findings reveal that while students initially self-reported high levels of Transcultural Competence, they preferred interactions with classmates with a similar linguistic and cultural background. However, close intercultural friendships positively influenced Transcultural Competence and four patterns of the interaction between these …

The Perceptions Of Senior International Officers On Internationalization Strategies At Research Universities, Iyonka M. Strawn-Valcy

This dissertation utilized semi-structured interviews with 15 Senior International Officers at U.S. research universities to interrogate three institutional issues: 1) motivations for internationalization, 2) strategies for internationalization, and 3) leadership for internationalization. Through inductive data analysis, the first finding uses globalization theory to explore how SIOs navigate the tension between global collaboration and competition, serving as both mission stewards and strategic advisors within research universities. The second finding utilizes contingency theory to depict how internationalization is a driver of mobility, cross-cultural learning, and global integration, yet often disrupts institutional norms, introduces unfamiliar ideas, and challenges the status quo. The purpose of the study was to explore global competence-based pedagogy in higher education. Under the umbrella of cultural capital theory and internationalization framework, a systematic literature review analyzed and synthesized 26 empirical studies pertaining to global competence education in postsecondary education from 2013 to 2022. The review revealed a research gap highlighting the lack of exploration into global competence pedagogy among students in higher vocational education. To prepare students for an increasingly interconnected world, P-12 teachers must be trained to infuse intercultural and global perspectives into their teaching practice. However, teacher education programs (TEPs) have been criticized for their lack of global perspectives in the curriculum and have been found to be the least internationalized programs at United States (U.S.) universities.
