Freedom Dreamers In Oakland, California: A Portraiture Of Creating Spatial Justice And Repair, Rebecca Sarah Jacquez
Doctoral Dissertations

Set Lists For Conversations On Necropolitics, Antiblackness, And Colonialism, Noah Morton
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
In lieu of a traditional syllabus, the following setlist uses the form of an academic syllabus to unsettle ideas around knowledge production and includes six sets with multimodal resources (films, songs, articles) to engage conversations on necropolitics, antiblackness, and colonialism. The setlists come from engaging in genealogies of resistance and liberation and are attentive to recognizing (re – again | cogn – to know | ize – to make) and acknowledging various technologies of domination while witnessing anachoreographies, or spirits of refusal. Each setlist flows from a check-in song, continues to the main set of readings/videos/podcasts, and ends with an …

Doctoral Dissertations
Dissertation Abstract
Conflicts Teaching About Conflicts: How Jewish Educators Engage with Israel-Palestine
Traditionally, Jewish teachers in Jewish supplementary school programs in the United States have erased the history of Palestinians when teaching about the founding of the State of Israel. Since Jewish students have been taught a single-sided story that ignores the injustices perpetrated against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, they now feel betrayed by their Jewish education. The purpose of this study was to learn how the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, impacted Jewish teachers as well as their students, classrooms, and communities during the subsequent …

Restorative Justice: How Adult Practitioners Navigate Contested Learning Environments, Andrés Castañeda
Restorative Justice: How Adult Practitioners Navigate Contested Learning Environments, Andrés Castañeda
Master's Theses
Restorative justice principles and practices have gained significant traction among educators in recent years, as they endeavor to establish school cultures that prioritize safety, student belonging, and humanizing relationships. However, existing literature indicates that schools who implement restorative justice frameworks tend to be obstructed by the historically punitive logics that govern them. As schools have become institutions that are highly racialized and influenced by neoliberal policies, it is important to continue to identify factors that can impede the work of racial equity and social justice within the schooling system. The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a qualitative study …

Saffronizing California’S History Curriculum: Long Distance Hindu Nationalism In The United States, Pei-Hsuan Wu
Saffronizing California’S History Curriculum: Long Distance Hindu Nationalism In The United States, Pei-Hsuan Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
How U.S. public schools teach South Asian history has been a site of contestation since the 2000s. California’s solicitation of community input into its history curriculum has brought ideological clashes to the California Department of Education (CDE); these conflicts over South Asian history are an extension of struggles in India driven by rising Hindu nationalism, a widespread movement for a “Hindus-first” India that brutalizes subaltern groups and dissenters. This violence is often justified through manufactured histories demonizing Indian minorities and glorifying an ancient, Hindu civilization.
This dissertation focused on the 2016-2017 controversy surrounding the CDE’s process to revise its history …

Teaching English In China’S Shadow Education Settings Where Communicative Competence Is Left Out, Bei Ye
Teaching English In China’S Shadow Education Settings Where Communicative Competence Is Left Out, Bei Ye
Master's Projects and Capstones
ABSTRACT
English shadow education, whose curriculum in the shadow mimics the curriculum inside the school (Zhang, 2014) has become increasingly prevalent in China. The fact that English shadow education simply serves for dealing with examinations without developing learner autonomy and communicative competence is a problem that needs to be solved. However, the huge demand for shadow education is derived from deep-rooted traditional values and the current education system. Also, many contextual realities such as high student-teacher ratio, overloaded curriculum, and teachers’ limited English language proficiency (Nunan, 2003; Yu, 2001; Zhang & Watkins, 2007) stop teachers applying the Communicative Approach and …

Preserving Catholic Identity In Catholic Secondary Schools And The Impact On Catholic Identity By Non-Catholic And International Students, Stephen Frederick Baccari
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of Catholic education has always been to educate students on the mission of the Catholic Church which is evangelization. This study examined the prospect of preserving Catholic identity in Catholic secondary schools that enroll non-Catholic and international students. Research revealed there was limited material available on non-Catholic students, but there was no study conducted on international students. It is precisely because there is no research on the experiences of international students in Catholic secondary schools that this study directs its attention. Specifically, the focus of research is directed on Catholic identity: what Catholic identity is; how one instills …

The Mirror Up To Nature: Identity Exploration Through Drama For English Language Learners, Grace Hudkins
Master's Projects and Capstones
It is widely accepted that language acquisition through content, arts integration, and identity development in concert with foreign or second language development are all important and valid approaches to ESOL education. However, there is a lack of literature addressing these three elements in concert. This project attempts to bridge this gap through the creation of an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) unit that addresses language acquisition, drama integration, and personal and cultural identity development. Going With The Flow: Using Menstrual Education As A Tool For Empowering Post Pubescent Nepali Girls, Graceann L. Cadiz
Master's Theses
Global discourse and research evidence on the benefits of girl’s education show that prioritizing girl’s education is the most successful strategy of breaking the cycle of poverty, gender inequality, and overpopulation. Moreover, there is a growing interest in closing the gender gap in education, but there has been insufficient attention to the specific needs of girls experiencing menses or menarche within schooling environments. The beginning of menstruation represents a pivotal event in development of the adolescent girl but is under-recognized and deemed insignificant with a culture of silence present throughout the rest of their lives. Critical Pedagogy And Peace Education In International Service-Learning: A Curriculum Exploring Race, Positionality, Power, And Privilege, Lissette A. Lizárraga
Master's Projects and Capstones
My project is an international service-learning curriculum intended to address the neocolonial implications that are perpetuated when sending predominately white, affluent participants abroad. My curriculum unpacks whiteness, privilege, the white savior complex, and American immigration history. Using race, power, and privilege, I explore how these themes relate to acquiring awareness and understanding of participants' societal positioning. Through this lens, my aim is that students can become aware of how systemic oppression works to disenfranchise certain groups, while others remain in power. With this awareness, students can become more mindful, aware, conscious, and critically engaged with their host communities through an …
