Journal of Appalachian Health

Background: Appalachian Kentucky faces the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the country due to poor health behaviors and lifestyle choices. These poor health behaviors are facilitated by a lack of cancer education. Youth represent a vulnerable population that could be greatly impacted by increased cancer education. Teachers have the power to facilitate this learning.

Purpose: This study examined the need for cancer education curriculum in Appalachian Kentucky middle and high schools from the perspective of educators.

Methods: An online survey was conducted with science and health teachers (n=21) in Appalachian Kentucky, consisting of questions that investigated existing cancer …

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are among the most common and traumatic sport-related injuries, and often negatively impact one’s quality of life during and post-rehabilitation. For many NCAA Division I and professional female athletes, rehabilitation is streamlined with a multidisciplinary team, including sport psychology. For others (e.g., NAIA, NCAA Division II, III athletes) this may not always be the case, as many of these athletic programs may not have the resources to meet the various needs of injured and rehabilitating female student-athletes. In these instances, rehabilitation motivation, adherence, and success may be more dependent on the athletes’ individual resources and personalities, …

An Examination Of High School Physical Education Teachers Support Of Students’ Physical Activity Self-Efficacy, Ken Murfay

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

Providing students with experiences to increase their confidence (self-efficacy) to be physically active is important because of the many health benefits associated with physical activity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2020). Several studies have shown that physical activity (PA) tends to decline as students age (Cooper et al., 2015; Metcalf et al., 2015; Troiano et al., 2008) and the largest declines usually occur in adolescence (Sallis, 2000). It is recommended that physical education (PE) serve as an intervention to promote PA and provide students with experiences to increase motor competence and PA knowledge (Weiss, 2013). Interventions within …

Exploring The Food Environment In Youth Recreation Facilities, Mallory Farris Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

Childhood obesity continues to be a worldwide problem and is associated with multiple poor health outcomes including diabetes, cancer, and hyperlipidemia. Youth who are overweight or obese also experience greater instances of depression, low self-esteem, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Given the negative impact of childhood obesity, there is a need to gain a clearer understanding of the issue by identifying causes and solutions. To curb the development and perpetuation of this disease, the root causes must be well-understood. The physical environment has often been described as contributing to childhood obesity, including schools, neighborhoods, and the home. Less known, however, …
