Single Running Bout Achilles Tendon Stiffness Adaptations In Elite Male Runners With Various Foot Strike Patterns, Joshua Sponbeck, Iain Hunter, Luke Brogan, Zachary Ludwig, Collette Batty, Wayne Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: Midfoot strike runners experience greater amounts of force through the Achilles Tendon while running compared with heel strike runners which may increase the risk of Achilles tendinopathy. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a five-mile running bout, on Achilles tendon stiffness as measured by elastography in elite male runners that exhibit a midfoot or heel strike pattern. METHODS: Ten male runners (age = 21.4 years, height = 179.54 cm, weight = 66.2 kg, average miles run over the last 6 weeks = 6) participated in this study. Runners free from injury and running …

CASE HISTORY: A 25-year-old professional volleyball player, who was playing in a game in Iceland, was transitioning off the net back-pedaling and pivoting as she felt something pop in her right calf. Initially, the athlete denied having any pain but was unable to plantarflex her foot or weight bear. At the time of injury, she was taking Sertraline (HCL 50 mg), Trazodone (50 mg), Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion HCL) 150 mg, Adderall (5mg) and birth control. PHYSICAL EXAM: The athlete was evaluated at an emergency room, where a Thompson squeeze test was performed and determined positive for an acute Achilles tendon …

Manual Versus Semi-Automated Detection Of Muscle Fascicle Pennation Angle Of The Vastus Lateralis, Natalie Walker, Jesus Hernandez-Sarabia, Carlos Estrada, Jocarlo Shields, Rob Maclennan, Jason Defreitas, Scott Crawford, Micheal Luera Feb 2021

Manual Versus Semi-Automated Detection Of Muscle Fascicle Pennation Angle Of The Vastus Lateralis, Natalie Walker, Jesus Hernandez-Sarabia, Carlos Estrada, Jocarlo Shields, Rob Maclennan, Jason Defreitas, Scott Crawford, Micheal Luera

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Muscle pennation angle (PA) is a key characteristic in muscle function. However, current methodologies are tedious, time consuming, and usually only include a few representative fascicles for the PA measures. Leveraging image processing methods could improve the efficiency of PA measurements while still providing valuable insight into architectural changes during specific tasks. PURPOSE: To compare manual (MAN) versus semi-automated (SA) analyses for muscle PA within the vastus lateralis (VL) utilizing ultrasound images taken during isometric knee extensions at different intensities relative to maximum volitional effort. METHODS: Sixteen lower-body resistance trained males (n =7, mean ± SD; 21±7 yrs; 77.7 ± …
