A Subgroup Analysis Of The Impact Of Self-Testing Frequency On Examination Scores In A Pathophysiology Course, Peter C. Panus, David W. Stewart, Nicholas E. Hagemeier, Jim C. Thigpen, Lauren Brooks

Nicholas E. Hagemeier

Objective: To determine if the frequency of self-testing of course material prior to actual examination improves examination scores, regardless of the actual scores on the self-testing.

Methods: Practice quizzes were randomly generated from a total of 1342 multiple-choice questions in pathophysiology and made available online for student self-testing. Intercorrelations, 2-way repeated measures ANOVA with post hoc tests, and 2-group comparisons following rank ordering, were conducted.

Results: During each of 4 testing blocks, more than 85% of students took advantage of the self-testing process for a total of 7042 attempts. A consistent significant correlation (p≤0.05) existed between the number of practice …

Evaluation Of An E-Portfolio Pilot Streamlining.Docx, Carrie Smucker

Deborah Bambini

There is need in higher education for a comprehensive electronic system that bridges administrative and curricular processes. Such a system would create an interconnected and streamlined platform that supports three aspects of administrative and curricular processes: processing graduate school applications, housing student progression files and tracking program outcomes through student projects.  Academic departments need flexible information systems to improve office processes, particularly in the areas of school application processing and student progression documents.  These departments also need a mechanism to report how their curricula are meeting benchmarks.  A comprehensive system would follow the student from the application stage to the …

Using A Peer Supervision And Mentoring Model In The Supervision Of Final Year Medical Students Placements In The Solomon Islands, Janie D. Smith Jan 2016

Using A Peer Supervision And Mentoring Model In The Supervision Of Final Year Medical Students Placements In The Solomon Islands, Janie D. Smith

Janie Smith

Makira Island in the Solomon Islands has a population of over 41,000 people, which in 2013 was serviced by one doctor, who worked in the hospital and travelled to remote sites, supported by highly-skilled nursing staff. The capital Kira Kira is a very impoverished community with no formal governance structure, poor infrastructure and a large variety of public health issues that lead to fascinating medicine. In 2013 Bond University’s School of Medicine in Australia commenced 5th year medical student placements at Kira Kira Hospital, with 33 students participating. At times there was little if no direct medical supervision of the …

Exploring The Differences In Teaching Perspectives Between Australian Pre-Service And Graduate Physical Education Teachers, Brendon P. Hyndman Dec 2014

Exploring The Differences In Teaching Perspectives Between Australian Pre-Service And Graduate Physical Education Teachers, Brendon P. Hyndman

Dr Brendon P Hyndman

Limited investigation has been undertaken into Australian physical educators’ teaching beliefs and intentions and those that have been researched have tended to utilise ‘qualitative’ research methods. The present study addresses a gap in the literature by exploring the differences in teaching perspectives between Australian pre-service and graduate physical education teachers. The teaching perspectives inventory (TPI) was administered to pre-service physical education teachers (n=105) graduate physical education teachers (n=37). Each TPI item was linked to one of five key teaching perspectives (apprenticeship, developmental, nurturing, social reform & transmission). Average teaching perspective scores were calculated for each of the five teaching perspectives …

Future Focus 2009 Grant Writing: Help To Get You Started..Doc, Mary Jo Maccracken

Dr. Mary J. MacCracken

This article seeks to help and motivate educators who have considered “writing a grant someday” so that the process and work of grant writing might become less threatening and more rewarding for the reader.  From the viewpoint of her own experience, the author will share the basics of what constitutes good preparation in order fora a grant proposal to be successful. Dissertation: The Effect Of Study Skills Training Intervention On United States Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices, John Griffith

John Griffith

The study examined the effects of a study skills training intervention course on U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices with five main purposes. The first was to examine the relationship between study skills training and the number of times students required academic interventions outside of normal class time. The second purpose was to examine the relationship between study skills training and end of course averages. The third was to determine the relationship between study skills training and the amount of additional instruction, measured in time, students required. The fourth purpose examined the relationship between study skills training and graduation rates. The …
