Preschool Whole Group Circle Time: Does More Comfortable Seating Give Rise To Preschooler Engagement?, Roberta Kopel
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Flexible and alternative seating in the classroom has been a topic of research and implementation in the classroom in recent years. At this time, much of the research discovered looked at inflatable cushions, therapy balls, or even low tables using pillows as seats. It has been observed in practice by this researcher that many times what is sometimes labeled as flexible seating is just something that is “cute” and not a regular chair with a back and legs or flexible seating as noted in research findings such as a therapy ball. Thus far, it has been difficult to determine the …
Yoga As A Positive Behavior Intervention, Kristen Kadrie
Yoga As A Positive Behavior Intervention, Kristen Kadrie
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This study explored teaching preschool age students how to use yoga strategies to calm their bodies, reducing the number of times a student demonstrates negative behavior. The fifteen participants were three through five year olds from one of the preschool classrooms at the Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) Early Learning Center. Baseline data was collected for five days, resulting in a determination that four of the students would be considered the subjects for the study, one who received special education services. Additional baseline data was collected for these students for ten days. All fifteen participants and the classroom teachers were …

Strategies For Teaching Based On Autism Research (Star Program) Curriculum Review And Implementation, Cassidy Harrington
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is becoming more prevalent in school systems. Researchers began tracking the prevalence of ASD in the year 2000. It is estimated that 1 in 68 children have ASD in the United States of America (1 in 42 prevalence for boys and 1 in 189 prevalence for girls) (Landa, 2018). Medically a child can be diagnosed with ASD but school systems themselves are not able to formally diagnose ASD in children. (ECTA, 2012). ASD can be hard to diagnose as some cases are more severe than others and the earlier that a child is found to have …
Assistive Technology In Early Childhood, Ciarah Thoreson
Assistive Technology In Early Childhood, Ciarah Thoreson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This capstone will be focusing on assistive technology in early childhood special education as it relates to students with physical health disabilities. This project is important because there seems to be a lack of information about supporting early childhood students with physical health disabilities in home and school settings. As an early childhood special education teacher, it can be difficult to determine what assistive technologies would be appropriate for each individual student. This project focuses on exploring assistive technology within early childhood to promote inclusion.
Assistive technology is any product or tool that helps individuals with disabilities learn, work, and …
Coaching As A Framework For Early Intervention Service Delivery, Rebecca Walzak
Coaching As A Framework For Early Intervention Service Delivery, Rebecca Walzak
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) has set forth a list of high leverage practices that have significant impact on children with special needs from birth through early childhood. One of these impactful strategies is building family capacity, which can be effectively addressed using a coaching framework for service delivery. Research in the field has not yet clearly defined coaching terms, definitions or characteristics, which impacts the fidelity of the practice and requires research and consensus moving forward. This body of work seeks to look at current research around the topic of coaching and it’s effectiveness in meeting student …

Snider (2021) A Guide for Preschool General Education Teachers to Identify and Support Children with Developmental Delays
It is essential to identify areas of professional development that educators need in order to effectively teach children. Professional development strengthens teachers knowledge and equips them with skills that will improve teaching practice and child achievement. This study looked at preschool general educator areas of weakness. The information that was obtained was used to create a professional development guide to enhance weakness areas. The results show that preschool general education teachers needed further information on identifying and supporting children with developmental delays. In …

Coaching And Embedding In Early Childhood, Danielle Tagtmeier
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Coaching and embedding has become an increasingly popular service delivery model in early childhood and has led to higher developmental outcomes for children and increased caregiver confidence and competence in working with their children with delays or disabilities. Coaching and embedding is an evidence based practice and considered a recommended practice by the Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children as a service delivery model for early intervention. Coaching involves many strategies and can be delivered through a variety of modalities including in-person or virtual services. This project includes a review of literature on coaching and embedding …
