The Attorney General's Office reached an agreement late last week with Casey Belanger, the University of Maine student accused of sending threatening e-mail to several folders on the FirstClass computer system. Both Belangers and the judge have signed a "consent judgement," permanently restraining him from harassing anyone of the minority status, according to Assistant Attorney General Stephen Wessler.

An informed community is a safe community, according to Public Safety Police Lt. Alan Stormann, but recent actions suggest the campus police are only willing to go so far in keeping the community informed. In 1996, seven "forcible rapes" were reported in the university's annual safety and security information report. The definition of forcible rape includes forcible "fondling, non-forcible incest and statutory rape." Of the seven reported "forcible rapes," according to Lt. Stormann, three were actual rapes, one was an attempted rape, two involved offensive touching and the last one involved a man masturbating on a woman. Of the seven …

The Maine Attorney General's Office filed a civil suit yesterday against a University of Maine student who allegedly used the FirstClass [email] computer system to make threatening statements directed at gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The suit claims Casey Belanger, 19, of Orono, violated the Maine Civil Rights Act... "Bias motivated threats of violence have absolutely no place anywhere in society, including our universities and colleges," Attorney General Andrew Ketterer said.

The purpose of this paper is to examine issues related to mentoring women in higher education. Specifically, this paper will address issues concerning the chilly climate women face on campus, issues that focus on gender stereotypes for women in higher education, and issues which prohibit successful mentoring between women. students and.administrators. Finally, recommendations for student service administrators to· enhance mentoring relationships are suggested.

This literature review examines the research that was available about the trends and the status of gender differences in science. The major factors identified by researchers and educators that contribute to this gender difference are discussed. Suggestions are presented which may minimize the gender differences and provide specific practices that can help improve the situation. The results of this review indicate that although a difference exists, there are ways that educators, parents, and students can make changes to decrease the difference.

This research review discusses the importance of teaching in a gender equitable manner. It examines the negative interactions teachers have with their students, many times without being aware of it. The effects of each of these negative teacher behaviors are explained and practical strategies and interventions are suggested to reduce the negative interactions.
Many of these strategies can be teacher directed, but strategies involving students, colleagues, and parents are also presented. The interventions are beneficial not only to female students but to male students as well. The Gender Expectations and Student Achievement (GESA) teacher training program is discussed and many …
