The article presents information about the program called "Professors as Writers" at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. The objective of the program is to provide a quiet and comfortable working place for faculty to write. This program was started 15 year back to help the faculty members to write more productively. The organizers of the program invite all college teachers to sign up for the dates and times that suit them at the beginning of the semester. The program sets aside structured time and space for the faculty to write.

Such responsibility may be vital for English teachers, especially, as we strive to establish communities of writers and spaces for critical thinking and conversation. When I sat down to write about this experience, I saw it as an opportunity to discuss a taboo situation and its positive aftermath, with the aim of demonstrating how it might be possible to use such events as points of departure in creating engaging writing assignments.

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit focuses on exploring The Great Gatsby and how the time period and culture in which the novel is written plays a vital part in the author s overall message in the novel. One of the key understandings to this unit is how good literature makes a statement on culture, but great literature is timeless and universal and provides a lens to view our own lives and society. Through an examination of the 1920s culture, the students will be able to understand Fitzgerald s message about the 1920s. They will further examine this through a group project where they …

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
This study focused on integrating art and literacy in elementary classrooms, grades 2-4, to benefit students’ writing, language, visual art production and art appreciation. The curriculum linked explicitly art making and writing. Implementation in year one with newly trained teachers impacted student achievement positively. Self created pictures drawn before writing enhanced the quality of writing by presenting a physical reality and complex texturing not available to students otherwise. Both writing quality and quantity grew as compared with controls and the school district as a whole. Student artistic observation also improved but still reflected a generally low level. Achievement gains transferred …

Project RAISE is a federally funded Arts Education Model Program Development and Dissemination Grant (AEMPDD). The proposal was granted funding for three years from 2001-2002 until 2003-2004. The proposal had two strands, one investigating the impact of a visual art strategy and the second examining the impact of Readers Theatre on reading comprehension. Findings show that: Students whose teachers used the program with high fidelity outperformed low fidelity classrooms in writing performance, aesthetic response writing, and the California Standards Test (CST) in English Language Arts. Teachers who adapted the program to their own context maintained involvement and their students tended …
Instructional Writing Strategies For The Secondary Teacher: A Handbook To Guide Content Area Teachers Implementing Writing Into Curriculum, Cathy S. Thompson
Instructional Writing Strategies For The Secondary Teacher: A Handbook To Guide Content Area Teachers Implementing Writing Into Curriculum, Cathy S. Thompson
All Graduate Projects
Secondary teachers are concerned that their students are having difficulties learning and retaining difficult concepts present in secondary curricula. Additionally, students may not be learning the content at a deep enough knowledge level to pass stringent high-stakes standardized tests required for graduation in the state of Washington. For students to succeed in the competitive global economy they must become self-monitoring critical thinkers. Research supports the use of writing-to-learn and content area writing strategies to facilitate metacognition and boost student learning. This project reviews the research in writing and metacognition, synthesizes the findings, and applies the results in a series of …

"Many of the ongoing difficulties teachers face revolve around the 'translation' of disciplinary knowledge—especially critical theory—into pedagogical praxis. It often seems that our teaching lags behind our theoretical knowledge by about two decades, and sometimes we wonder if it will ever catch up. This sense of disjunction has been compounded by the difficulty of teaching postmodern understandings of subjectivity, truth, and epistemology in an increasingly commodified teaching context, where consumers expect to purchase a clear, identifiable, and literally usable product, and where 'knowledge' often means easily digestible and repeatable content rather than analytic skills, critical understandings, or complex world views. …

This study explores how kindergartners' talks and drawings inform our ways of developing a curriculum of caring and imagination. The mandates of kidnergartners' curriculum tend to emphasize children's mastery of literacy skills while ignoring their natural development and imagination.
