Young people today are increasingly disengaged from their education. Studies indicate that of all school subjects, American students struggle to engage in STEM subjects more than others. For decades, we have known that student engagement/disengagement impacts teachers. Researchers have also claimed that engagement/disengagement can be described as a construct made up of affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions (ABC). However, we do not understand how teachers experience student disengagement in these three areas. While written lesson plans may seem like a lot of work, with little purpose or benefit to new teachers, a well-written lesson plan is quite valuable for many reasons. Governments around the world are calling for a revival of apprenticeship on a large scale, emphasizing the value of the one-on-one, human interaction between master and apprentice and the teaching involved in that interaction. Although a broader historical view of apprenticeship shares these ideas, certain prominent threads within recent educational research have done a great deal to deemphasize them. Some go so far as to overlook the master-apprentice relationship altogether, assert that masters simply do not exist, and claim that apprenticeship learning happens without any teaching at all. The Cost And Quality Of Open Textbooks: Perceptions Of Community College Faculty And Students, Tj Bliss, John Hilton Iii, David Wiley, Kim Thanos

Proponents of open educational resources (OER) claim that significant cost savings are possible when open textbooks displace traditional textbooks in the college classroom. We investigated student and faculty perceptions of OER used in a community college context. Over 125 students and 11 faculty from seven colleges responded to an online questionnaire about the cost and quality of the open textbooks used in their classrooms. Results showed that the majority of students and faculty had a positive experience using the open textbooks, appreciated the lower costs, and perceived the texts as being of high quality. One of the most fundamental issues in teaching, arguably the biggest, is discovering the most effective lesson elements for each group of learners. This includes a solid curriculum, performance objectives, age-appropriate pedagogical ingredients, ability-level activities and assessments focused on measuring learning to create a great lesson. When these elements are blended artistically with a variety of classroom management skills, necessary equipment, instructional support resources, behavior management rules and high expectations in a nurturing environment, the teacher has created the best possible learning atmosphere for each individual student.

Effective professional development is vital for improving mathematics teaching (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM], 2007), so studying effective professional development programs is important to the field of mathematics education. This case study presents findings on one teacher, Rebecca, and her experiences in a five-semester mathematics professional development for elementary teachers. The participants in this professional development engaged in collaborative problem solving of challenging mathematical tasks over extended periods of time. This thesis brings a much-needed focus on the quality and scholarship of teaching as it pertains to educational and faculty development. The main purpose of this paper is to outline what more than 200 faculty members across a wide variety of disciplines have focused on over a three-year period to make significant (a 1.5 standard deviation increase or higher in online student ratings) and sustained improvements in their teaching. The top three factors of improvement include active/practical learning, teacher/student interactions, and clear expectations/learning outcomes. I first met Scott Howell in 2005 in Jekyll Island, Georgia at the annual Distance Learning Administration (DLA) conference, which was sponsored in part by the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration (OJDLA). Scott is co-editor of the three-volume book series Online Assessment and Measurement (2005) published by IDEA group and is this year's chair of the University Continuing Education Association's (UCEA) Distance Learning Community of Practice (DLCoP). One method underutilized in training teachers to use technology is to use live modeling sessions. This study qualitatively investigates how the use of modeling sessions impacted students. In this study we found that modeling was perceived by most students to be effective at teaching technology skills and ideas for integrating technology as teachers. However, we identified several breakdowns in the ability of students to transfer their understanding of technology integration to their own situations. We explain this difficulty of transfer of learning and describe five situations when these breakdowns were likely to occur. Implications include the benefits of using live …

This presentation reports the findings from our investigation of the professors designated as the most innovative users of technology at our university. After seeking nominations from department heads, we selected thirty-five of the most successful and innovative professors as case studies. After interviewing these cases, and in some instances observing their classes, we identified five major patterns that represented the positive impacts technology was having on their instruction. These patterns were evident in several cases across many different disciplines, indicating they might be generalizable to many different situations and contexts. Language anxiety is a form of anxiety that can negatively affect language learners by disrupting their cognitive processing, by rendering their learning experience unpleasant, and by reducing the quantity and quality of their language production. First, this essay details the technical elements required to set up a computer for Web-surfing, then it discusses the rationale for a Web-browser component in Culture and Civilization courses. This study treats the necessity to de-emphasize the focus on grammar teaching alone in L2, and to introduce methods which are not teacher-centered, so as to enable students to interact more among each other.

By using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives – but in reality using a sequence of teaching techniques that could be applied to other grammatical situations – this article presents the use of sea shells as a visual and tactile aid which allows students to shift their L2 efforts from an abstract notion to a concrete usage.

This thesis is a study of the development, use and value of a method of teaching the scriptures called Seminary Bowl from its beginning in 1964-65 to the present day.

The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the full-time teachers of the seminary program are using Seminary Bowl and to have teachers and students evaluate this method of teaching the scriptures.

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to develop criteria for creating thematic literature units appropriate to the English language facility and to the culture of students in the LDS secondary schools in the South Pacific, and (b) to create three thematic literature units at the Form 5 (11th grade) level which would exemplify the recommended criteria.
An analysis of questionnaire responses revealed that a concept-centered approach to literature should take precedence, with geographical literature—especially Polynesian—also receiving emphasis. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the LDS Seminary Scripture Chase in the following areas: (1) Principles of learning involved; (2) Percentage of full-time teachers using the Scripture Chase; (3) Teacher evaluation of the Scripture Chase in terms of (a) teacher training in the Scripture Chase, (b) student involvement and application, (c) areas of effectiveness and (d) evaluation and rating of the over-all program.
Questionnaires were sent to 498 full-time Seminary teachers in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Canada with a return of 80.3 percent. The data revealed that 143, or 33 percent regularly use …

The purpose of this research and study was to evaluate the use of selected Book of Mormon filmstrips and determine their value in teaching Book of Mormon history. New impetus to use filmstrips was received with the announcement that the Department of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion had produced eighteen filmstrips using episodes from Book of Mormon history. The Department was desirous that the filmstrips be utilized in the most effective way by teachers in meeting the individual needs of students in this course of religious instruction.

This course has been written to present a simplified version of the Book of Mormon for use with students whose reading skills are below average. It was specifically designed for released-time Indian seminary students. The Indian students often find it very hard to compete with white students in seminary. Where this problem exists teachers have found it advisable to form all-Indian classes.
