Teacher Retention In A Rural East Texas School District, Gary J. Miller
Teacher Retention In A Rural East Texas School District, Gary J. Miller
School Leadership Review
This qualitative study investigated what factors kept teachers committed to teaching in one rural east Texas school district despite the perceived educational inequalities of rural districts compared to suburban and urban districts. When it comes to teacher retention, rural school leaders cite school environment and community lifestyle compatibility as the primary reasons for staying. Despite the considerable number of rural school districts throughout the United States, research continues to largely ignore the unique relationships found in rural locales. Rural school districts offer many advantages over their suburban and urban counterparts; it is a matter of identifying what is important to …
A Case Study Regarding Induction Supports And Activities And Their Impact On Successful Teacher Retention, Alicia Ponds
A Case Study Regarding Induction Supports And Activities And Their Impact On Successful Teacher Retention, Alicia Ponds
Doctorate in Education
At the end of every school year, new teachers either stay or leave public classrooms. Multiple challenges drive these new teacher choices. State, district, and local administrators struggle to fill teacher vacancies. New teacher departures challenge schools with the maintenance of an attractive work environment and provision of quality student education. This case study shares how five successful Minnesota educators apply extrinsic activities and intrinsic supports to not only meet these challenges, but effectively respond to the 2019-2020 onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through research interviews, this qualitative study analyzes intrinsic supports and extrinsic activities in relation to positive teaching …

Teacher Retention In Secure Residential Settings, Daniel Froemel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A phenomenological study was conducted to identify the factors associated with job retention among teachers in secure residential treatment centers in Tennessee. Central to this investigation was the exploration of how residential teachers perceive they are supported in their position, how teachers in residential settings perceive the culture of the facility, and what factors are associated with teacher retention in secure residential settings. Through a series of fifteen interviews, common themes emerged from the coding that provided insight into these questions.
Teachers who had worked in residential settings for more than five years seemed to have very strong internal belief …

Potential Mentoring Impacts On Oklahoma Induction-Year School-Based Agricultural Education Teachers: A Modified Delphi Study, Jessica M. Toombs, Jon W. Ramsey
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
Literature supports benefits of mentoring for induction-year school-based agricultural education (SBAE) teachers. Yet for the past 15 years, no structured mentoring program has been offered for Oklahoma SBAE induction-year teachers. This study sought to find consensus among an expert panel representing Oklahoma SBAE regarding the impact on induction-year SBAE teachers without a structured mentoring program. Panel members were asked to respond to three open-ended questions representing goals, outcomes, and impacts of a mentoring program. Sixty-two unique statements representing eight themes met consensus. Themes included building mentoring relationships, effective emotional management, effective SBAE program management, impact to the profession, student learning, …
Leveraging The Perspectives Of Rural Educators To Develop Realistic Job Previews For Rural Teacher Recruitment And Retention, Henry Tran, Suzy Hardie, Simone Gause, Peter Moyi, Rose Ylimaki
Leveraging The Perspectives Of Rural Educators To Develop Realistic Job Previews For Rural Teacher Recruitment And Retention, Henry Tran, Suzy Hardie, Simone Gause, Peter Moyi, Rose Ylimaki
The Rural Educator
Rurality is perceived by many to be a deficit or challenge when it comes to teacher recruitment and retention. However, recently, some have argued that moving away from a deficit model and treating rurality as an asset may hold promise for teacher staffing. Drawing on Person-organization (P-O) fit theory, we extend this argument in our study by investigating the perceptions of teachers from the rural Lowcountry of South Carolina, a region with documented severe teacher shortages, concerning rural teaching advantages and challenges. These reflections provide the data necessary to develop realistic job previews (RJP) that can be highlighted in the …

The Teaching And Learning International Survey 2018. Australian Report Volume 2: Teachers And School Leaders As Valued Professionals, Sue Thomson, Kylie Hillman
OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
The OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) collects internationally comparable data on the learning environment and the working conditions of teachers and principals in schools across the world. TALIS 2018 is the third cycle of TALIS, and Australia has participated in each cycle. In Australia, a nationally representative sample of 4,000 teachers and principals from 200 lower secondary schools was randomly selected to participate in the study. Findings from TALIS 2018 in Australia are reported in two volumes. The first volume, Teachers and School Leaders as Lifelong Learners, published in November 2019, explored teaching practices, the changing contexts for …
An Innovative Approach To Teacher Retention, Marc Dixon, Ruthe Francis
An Innovative Approach To Teacher Retention, Marc Dixon, Ruthe Francis
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Among the many challenges educational leaders are facing, teacher attrition is most paramount. Not only are teachers with less than five years of experience leaving the field at alarming rates, but the number of teachers with twenty or more years of experience has also decreased by 10% since 2000. Teachers who leave the field often site a lack of support as their primary source of frustration. While school districts across the nation have made efforts to address teacher attrition, induction programs are often managed at the district level and completed solely out of compliance.
After reviewing the literature on teacher …

Using data from 25 semistructured interviews and publicly available school/community demographic information, this qualitative multiple‐case study sought to answer the following questions: (a) How do Latinx Spanish teachers in the rural South perceive experiences that help or hinder retention? (b) In what ways are Latinx Spanish teachers navigating their role as advocates for linguistic and cultural diversity in their rural schools and communities? Findings showed that participants were constantly balancing the benefits and challenges of their work in a …
Delving Into The First Year: A Case Study Of The Novice Teacher Induction Experience, Lindsay Stewart
Delving Into The First Year: A Case Study Of The Novice Teacher Induction Experience, Lindsay Stewart
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The issue of high teacher turnover and low teacher retention rates are the driving force of this research. Teacher retention begins with understanding how induction practices are carried out both formally and informally and what support novice teachers need. The majority of research around teacher induction and turnover works with large data sets to produce pertinent percentages and figures (Ingersoll, 2012; Glazerman et al., 2010; Redding & Henry, 2018; Ronfeldt & McQueen, 2017). To supplement the existing research around new teacher induction, this case study was conducted to 1) combine the research-based induction practices with the theoretical underpinnings of these …
Case Study Of School Practices, Policies, And Culture That Foster Small, Faith-Based School Teacher Retention, Brian Nelson
Case Study Of School Practices, Policies, And Culture That Foster Small, Faith-Based School Teacher Retention, Brian Nelson
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Teachers are the very foundation of a successful educational program. High rates of teacher attrition threaten the core mission of small, private, non-Catholic, faith-based secondary schools—to transform students spiritually, intellectually, and personally. It is vital that the faculty at these schools is comprised of quality teachers who return year-to-year to deepen relationships with students and continue the momentum of student transformation. The problem addressed in this single, instrumental case study is the high rate of teacher attrition that exists within small, private, non-Catholic, faith-based schools. The purpose of this study was to examine practices and policies that support teacher retention …
Exploring The Impact Of A Professional Identity On Teacher Retention: A Phenomenological Study, Elizabeth A. Cunningham
Exploring The Impact Of A Professional Identity On Teacher Retention: A Phenomenological Study, Elizabeth A. Cunningham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although there is a great deal of research literature available on the causes for and the impact of teacher attrition and research on professionalism, there is little research to prove what connection, if any, exists between the two. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to determine whether the development of a strong professional identity could positively impact teacher retention in a specific school. The research was conducted by first gathering baseline data from teachers who took 2 established surveys, the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and the Professional Self-Identity Questionnaire (PSIQ). Focus group interviews with volunteer teachers followed. Survey …
Teacher Attrition And Retention In Kansas: A Case Study Of Geographically Rural States With Persistent Teacher Shortages, Tuan Nguyen
Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy
Teacher attrition is a key contributor to teacher shortages in many states, particularly those with large geographically rural areas. Using seven waves of the School and Staffing Survey and Kansas as a case study, this study examines the teacher labor force from 1988 to 2012. Moreover, the study describes the teacher mobility patterns for Kansas from 2000 to 2012 and compares them against the national average, the Midwest states, and the Great Plains states. Furthermore, it examines whether younger teachers, teachers with graduate degrees, and STEM and special education teachers in Kansas are more or less likely to turn over. …
Improving International Teacher Retention In São Paulo International Schools: What Can Leaders Do?, Christiaan Rombaut
Improving International Teacher Retention In São Paulo International Schools: What Can Leaders Do?, Christiaan Rombaut
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The exponential growth of international schools worldwide has created a high demand for native English-speaking teachers around the world. São Paulo international schools are not exempt from this increase in demand for these expatriate teachers. As international schools typically offer short-term contracts of two years to expatriate teachers that are often not renewed, international teacher retention becomes a significant factor in improving teaching and learning in international schools. High teacher turnover is even more a concern in South American international schools, where teachers tend to stay at their schools for less time than in international schools in other regions and …

A Case Study Of Teacher Turnover And Retention In An Urban Elementary School, Barry Kamrath, Kim Bradford
Educational Considerations
This mixed methods study examined the phenomenon of teacher turnover in one high poverty urban elementary school to determine common characteristics of teachers who remained long-term (> 5 years), as well as factors that contributed to teachers’ decisions to leave before reaching their sixth year. The study included structured interviews with long-term teachers and surveys of short-term teachers. Qualitative data were analyzed through constant-comparative analysis to determine emergent themes; whereas, quantitative data provided triangulation of interview data as well as the formalizing of comparisons. Long-term teachers had built deep connections to the school, its students, and the community, despite the …
The Impact Of Self-Efficacy, Teacher Mentoring And Administrative Support On Teacher Retention In Title 1 Schools, Holly Cwiklinski
The Impact Of Self-Efficacy, Teacher Mentoring And Administrative Support On Teacher Retention In Title 1 Schools, Holly Cwiklinski

Information Security Policy (ISP) compliance is crucial to the success of healthcare organizations due to security threats and the potential for security breaches. UNIX Administrators (UXAs) in healthcare Information Technology (IT) maintain critical servers that house Protected Health Information (PHI). Their compliance with ISP is crucial to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of PHI data housed or accessed by their servers. The use of cognitive heuristics and biases may negatively influence threat appraisal, coping appraisal, and ultimately ISP compliance behavior. These failures may result in insufficiently protected servers and put organizations at greater risk of data breaches and financial loss. …

Childcare As An Innovative Response To Recruitment And Retention For Teachers, Tia Savage Jones
Education Projects
This study focused on implementing exclusive childcare centers as an incentive to increase the retention rate of teachers in South Carolina. It highlights the key components contributing to the retention rate of teachers in the field of education—namely family stressors and financial strain. Many working parents have a childcare problem and are in search of a solution. According to Bright Horizons(2019), “Childcare tuition currently exceeds the cost of college in many places, available spaces are in severely short supply, quality care is hard to come by” (p.6). Teachers are working parents;and although they are employed in the field of education, …

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Annual teacher attrition hovers around 8% and causes of teacher attrition have been studied widely. However, more needs to be known about specific aspects of teacher preparation that can foster retention. The goal of this study was to understand the perspectives of veteran teachers regarding retention. This investigation employed semi-structured interviews with teachers who graduated from a south western university and who have persisted in their teaching careers in a large, urban school district. Our analyses conveyed that rich field experiences and particular characteristics of mentor teachers can foster retention; however, these persisters also persevered through inauthentic teacher preparation experiences.

Retaining Teachers Rated As Effective In Title I Schools, Jessica Nicole Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Teacher retention and continuity are important for students, particularly for those in middle- to high-poverty, low-achieving schools. There is a gap in practice related to providing support for and overcoming barriers to the retention of teachers rated as effective, particularly keeping them with students with socioeconomic and academic need. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of leaders in Title I schools to understand better the elements and support they identify for retaining teachers rated as effective. Bruner's work explaining how needs, motivations, and expectations influence perceptions informed the study. Research questions were designed to …

Interventions To Address Teacher Attrition From Low-Income Schools, Kenneth Bradley Darnell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research problem was teacher turnover from low-income K–12 schools to higher-income K–12 schools. This problem is important because of the negative effects on student learning and the high cost of replacing departed teachers. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to describe how low-income schools can implement interventions that will positively address the challenges teachers face that lead to teacher attrition through the support of administration, parental support, coworker relationships, and safety as perceived by teachers who formerly taught in low-income schools. The conceptual framework for this study was human capital theory. The participants were 56 K–12 teachers …
