Atrazine herbicide has been in an EPA special review since 1994 because of soil surface runoff concerns. Beginning in 1997, we evaluated atrazine and non-atrazine herbicide treatments in conventional tillage corn and no-till corn on university research farms at Clay Center (irrigated) and Lincoln, Nebraska (non-irrigated). The objective was to compare some common atrazine and non-atrazine herbicides in soil-applied and post emergence treatment combinations. Fourteen herbicide treatments were selected to represent commonly used herbicide classes and application timings. This NebFact reports the no-till results.

In July 1996, the USDA published the Final Rule on Pathogen Reduction for meat and poultry processing facilities. Its goal is to reduce the occurrence of food-borne pathogens in meat and poultry products. The rule requires carcass sampling for "generic" E. coli in meat and poultry slaughter operations. The USDA has developed guidelines for acceptable, marginal and unacceptable amounts of E. coli to be used by the processor to determine if their process is controlling microbial hazards. Anhydrous ammonia is one of the most efficient and widely used sources of nitrogen for row-crop production. Because it is a cheap source of nitrogen and readily available, large quantities of anhydrous ammonia are used as nitrogen fertilizer.

Anhydrous ammonia has disadvantages, especially in handling. It must be stored and handled under high pressure, which requires specially designed and well-maintained equipment. In addition, to ensure operator safety, workers must be trained to handle this product and to follow strict work procedures.
