Editor’s Note: In May 2017, fourteen Dordt College (now University) professors, co-led by Dr. Josh Matthews and Dr. Walker Cosgrove, gathered for three hours a day to talk about Moby-Dick. These professors came from the disciplines of theology, literature, law, chemistry, biology, history, and psychology. This was the second of the annual “Great Texts” seminar that we hold during the summers, which are week-long discussions of important and influential books. This post introduces a series on Moby-Dick that developed from that seminar.

The Effects Of Reading Fluency Interventions On Different Populations Of Students Repeated Readings Vs. Lexia Core 5, Matt Den Hartog
The Effects Of Reading Fluency Interventions On Different Populations Of Students Repeated Readings Vs. Lexia Core 5, Matt Den Hartog
Master of Education Program Theses
Much research has been conducted on the importance of reading fluency. Researchers nearly all conclude that reading fluency greatly affects a student’s overall ability to read. However, often times reading fluency is not given the same importance in intermediate and upper elementary grades. This study was conducted to determine whether Lexia Core 5 or repeated reading interventions had a greater effect on reading fluency gains for third through fifth grade students in one rural, public school. Forty-two students participated in the twelve week study. Various different subgroups of students were looked at and monitored. The final results, as a whole, …

Revolutionizing Reading: Discovering The Power Of A Reading Workshop Model In The High School English Classroom, Kaitlyn De Wild
Master of Education Program Theses
This action research study investigated the effects of a Reading Workshop model in a high school English classroom in a private school in the Midwest. The participants were sixty-six juniors in a general education classroom. Students in the study took a pre-survey at the beginning of the year and a post-survey at the end of February to determine any changes in independent reading habits. Throughout the course of the study, students had choice in independent reading, which they kept track of and reflected on. In addition to analyzing these reflections, the researcher also interviewed eight of the students on their …
Resources Preservice Teachers Use To Think About Student Writing, Leah A. Zuidema, James E. Fredricksen
Resources Preservice Teachers Use To Think About Student Writing, Leah A. Zuidema, James E. Fredricksen
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This article identifies five categories of resources that preservice teachers drew on as they considered student writing and planned their own approaches to assessing and teaching writing. Identifying these resources helps us better understand how beginning writing teachers think about student writing—and better understand mismatches that commonly occur between what teacher educators teach and what new teachers actually do. Our study builds on literature that considers how writing teachers are prepared, extends research about how preservice teachers use what they learn, and adds layers of detail to literature about the resources that beginning teachers draw upon to aid and support them …

Reading As A Necessity: Best Practices For Incorporating Reading Into One English Course, Kristin M. Janssen
Master of Education Program Theses
This action research project investigated the best practices of teaching reading in a middle school curriculum requiring reading and writing to be combined in one English course. A private middle school in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, was evaluated on its use of the best practices. The participants were 24 teachers of 13 different subjects taught to students in seventh and eighth grade. All middle school teachers were sent a survey including questions about the best practices of reading across the curriculum, integrated instruction, and cooperative learning. The results of this study suggested that best practices of reading instruction …

Middle School Reading: From Reluctant To Strategic Reader, Amy S. Groetsema
Middle School Reading: From Reluctant To Strategic Reader, Amy S. Groetsema
Master of Education Program Theses
Research shows that student attitudes towards school reading declines dramatically as students reach upper elementary grades (Mckenna, 1995), yet as these students reach middle school and high school they will be faced with increasing demands to be critical readers. Reluctant middle school readers must have reading experiences that are successful in order to change their attitudes towards reading. Reading teachers must equip their middle level students to be strategic readers in order to be prepared for the critical reading and thinking demands of middle school and high school. This means that reading instruction must be organized in a way that …
