Newly appointed Department Chairs are often on their own to learn “on the job” the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed. One way to mitigate the challenges of this high-stakes approach is to identify a second leader who can serve in the role of mentor, coach or Co-Chair alongside the new Chair. It is essential to identify areas of professional development that educators need in order to effectively teach children. Professional development strengthens teachers knowledge and equips them with skills that will improve teaching practice and child achievement. This study looked at preschool general educator areas of weakness. The information that was obtained was used to create a professional development guide to enhance weakness areas. The results show that preschool general education teachers needed further information on identifying and supporting children with developmental delays. In …

Eager to provide graduate students the opportunity to develop themselves professionally, University Libraries in partnership with the Graduate School and International Education initiated a graduate student speaker series in 2018. The series, now in its second year, provides graduate students a forum in which to present their research- whether a finished product or work in progress- to the university community. To be eligible to speak in the series, each student must have used resources from the Special Collections Division as part of their work. If teachers want to be successful in reaching and teaching all learners, the development of funds of knowledge must continue throughout an entire teacher’s career, as classroom demographics are continually changing. In this session we spotlight the reading of YA literature to develop teachers’ funds of knowledge of diverse at-risk adolescents and how this experience can lead to culturally relevant pedagogies.
