Modern Vs. Traditional: Comparing Reading-Level And Strategy-Based Small Groups In Primary Grades, Abigail Tosch, Jenna Andriakos

The reading-level-based approach for literacy instruction is commonly found in the classroom. However, this approach has not been reaching the needs of all students in the classrooms often enough. Teachers should meet the students where they are. The purpose of this study was to determine which method, reading-level-based grouping or strategy-grouping, was more beneficial for student comprehension growth. Students from 1st- and 2nd-grade, small-group Tier 2 reading intervention in 2 different elementary schools were given a grade-level pre- and post-reading passage and asked comprehension questions. Children at the beginning of their formal educational experiences are developing cognitively, socially, and emotionally. However, due to the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, many children are behind in these developmental areas. Self-awareness is a foundation of students’ understandings of themselves and the world around them. A common practice in today’s primary-grade classrooms, teacher-student writing conferences are considered a vital component of instruction by accomplished writing teachers and advocates of process writing. Story writing and story grammar have been studied extensively in an effort to improve students’ reading comprehension. Instruction on story structure and on elements of stories can improve the writing quality of students’ papers. This paper explains a process of supporting primary-grade students’ story writing. The approach is based on strategy instruction and incorporates talk and dramatic play as ways to support the development of characters, descriptions of characters and events, and dialogue between characters. Guidelines are provided and step-by-step directions for teachers to use this work with their students.

This paper seeks to describe the importance of using the context of a candy shop and how focusing on discourse can deepen place value understanding in the base ten number system. Using the language of pieces (ones), rolls (tens), and boxes (hundreds) helps situate place value in a familiar context for K-2 students. Best practice in mathematics instruction is also addressed, including examining the progression of learning for place value concepts, using effective tools to support place value learning, and using explanation and justification to help students deepen their understanding of place value. Oral language skills are essential to the future literacy of students in kindergarten and first grade, especially emergent bilinguals (EBs). Yet, U.S. teachers receive few professional development opportunities that prepare them to use effective strategies for promoting oral language development. Since teacher education is compartmentalized into curricular silos, methods for literacy instruction are taught in one course, methods for arts instruction in another, and so on. This article argues that well-designed arts integration can meet a key need of young, linguistically diverse students by providing opportunities for oral language practice across content areas. Writing to persuade is an important writing purpose that students and learners need to develop and use both in their academic lives and in the workplace. The Common Core State Standards set specific expectations for students’ opinion writing starting from Kindergarten. This article explains the use of response to reading as a way to introduce opinion writing in the primary grades. The approach is based on strategy instruction, reading and writing connections through interactive read alouds, collaborative reasoning through oral expression, and evaluation to revise through the use of specific evaluation criteria.
