Throughout history, students with blindness and low vision (BLV) have been vastly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines with regards to both K-12 education and post-secondary endeavors (Burgstahler, 1994; Supalo, 2010). This underrepresentation of students with BLV in STEM is due to limitations in technology that allow them to access data in a laboratory setting, thus inhibiting their abilities to partake actively in data acquisition with their peers. Since 1958, the New York State Education Department has officially promoted the policy of consolidating small, rural schools. This policy is delineated in the Master Plan for School Reorganization, and while the centralization of most one-room rural schools has been successful, the state has been less successful in the consolidation of smaller, centralized rural school districts. The program, the Applied Global Innovation Initiative (AGII) at Grand Valley State University, has been evolving since 2004 in an ongoing relationship with La UNAN, the Nicaraguan national university system. Nicaragua, at the base of the socioeconomic pyramid, is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The two leaders, Engineering and Business faculty members from GVSU, require no special expertise or language skills for volunteers, but are excited at the prospect of having a library professional among the support group in this year’s seventh annual iteration of the program.
