Background Report On College Affordability In Maine, Philip A. Trostel
Background Report On College Affordability In Maine, Philip A. Trostel
Economic Development
The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education gave Maine an “F” grade for affordability of higher education in both Measuring Up 2000 and Measuring Up 2002. In the 2000 report, Maine’s affordability score (54 on a 100-point scale) was 3rd worst in the nation (ahead of RI and NH). In the 2002 report, Maine’s affordability score (56) was in a three-way tie (with NY and VT) for 7th worst in the country (ahead of NH, RI, MT, OR, DE, OH). Although there are legitimate criticisms of the methodology for constructing these scores, it seems pretty clear that college …

People, Politics, Policy: The (Im)Possibilities Of Institutional Collaborations, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The university is among the oldest and most durable institutions in the world, surviving over 900 years. Until relatively recently, universities were small institutions, catering to slight proportions of the general population. They were elite institutions. Educating these small groups was the remit of universities. However, the reach, roles, and expectations of universities have changed especially in the last century and a half. While still catering to a select group, the proportions of many societies which have access to university education have grown. Further, whereas education was previously the sole function of universities, research expectations appeared about 150 years ago. …

Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Report, Bruce Henrickson
Sabbaticals
I plan to visit other colleges, agriculture businesses, and various other agriculture entities to help update my knowledge and learn about their contribution to the agriculture industry. I have found my schedule of responsibilities at Parkland has kept me so busy that it has been very difficult to adequately keep up to date in our fast changing industry. This leave would allow me to greatly improve my knowledge base for teaching and ultimately my future students will have a better opportunity to learn.

Recently assessment has become an important component of student affairs and higher education to assist in determining the effect and impact of programs and educational initiatives. To embrace this trend, the Office of Housing and Residence Life at Ball State University (IN) created learning outcomes for students living in residence halls. Through reflective questioning, discussion, and assessment, the Residence Life program strives to further the development and learning experience of students.
