The term pedagogy often describes the art and science of teaching. However, its Greek roots refer to the method of the teacher leading the classroom. Translating Code-Switching In The Indonesian Version Of Der Boxer, Dias R. Salim

International Review of Humanities Studies

Code-switching is the use of more than one language in an utterance. Within a narrative work like comics, code-switching can be used to show exoticism, character identity, or dramatic effect. Translating such a speech pattern poses a challenge to a translator. This paper discusses how a translator covert speeches that code-switch to three foreign languages – English, Yiddish, and Hebrew – in the German comic der Boxer by Reinhard Kleist into Indonesian. Translation units such as words, phrases, and sentences in the the target text will be compared to its counterparts in the source text to note the procedures used …

What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo May 2013

What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo

SURGE

I’ve been gallivanting around this beautiful planet posing as a study abroad student taking classes and writing papers for the past academic year, one semester in England and one in Argentina (where I still am) and, just like all the brochures, promotions, and panels of study abroad survivors say, it has been absolutely chock-full of amazing experiences, people, places, foods—I think “transformative” is the proper term.

But transformative can mean many things. It doesn’t just mean that you “find yourself” or “change your life”—it means you see the less glamorous stuff about yourself, too. [excerpt]

Experiences Of Foreign Language Teachers And Students Using A Technology-Mediated Oral Assessment, Jeannie Ducher

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The development of the speaking skill at the lower levels of proficiency is seldom assessed as a matter-of-fact in the foreign language classroom, for reasons of impracticality and difficulty of implementation. Although the practice of the speaking skill is an important part of current approaches to the teaching of foreign languages, issues of time and logistics often prohibit the direct evaluation of the skill in a manner consistent with best practices, which purport that practice and assessment must be closely aligned, and that students benefit from self-evaluation and teacher feedback. Classroom research has shown that a skill that is not …
