Centering The Voices Of South Carolina's Early Care And Education Teachers: A Multi-Case Study Examining How They Select And Are Informed By Professional Development, Lenna Young

All Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the existing literature focused on quality early care and education (ECE). Specifically, this study examines two main research questions: (1) How do teachers in South Carolina licensed, privately-funded ECE programs select professional development opportunities and (2) How does participating in professional development inform their practices? These questions are particularly significant in light of the minimal requirements for teachers to enter the ECE field in South Carolina. Due to the low entry requirements for ECE teachers, professional development can play a key role in transforming minimally qualified individuals into teachers who care …

Through the teachers they hire, the administrative practices they put into place, and their ability to promote a shared vision, directors create professional environments that enable teachers to provide enriching learning environments for children. Recognizing the importance of program leadership, an increasing number of state initiatives are including a measure of administrative practices in their approaches to assessing and improving program quality across early learning settings. To help inform these initiatives, this research examined how administrative practices in Head Start programs …

Connecting The Dots: Director Qualifications, Instructional Leadership Practices, And Learning Environments In Early Childhood Programs, Mccormick Center For Early Childhood Leadership

McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Publications

It has long been assumed that directors are a linchpin to high-quality early care and education programs. However, research investigating the influence of director qualifications on instructional leadership practices and the quality of classroom learning environments is sparse. The research that has been conducted, however, supports conventional wisdom that better educated directors provide teachers with supervision that enables more effective classroom teaching.1 The purpose of the current study was to explore different aspects of directors’ qualifications to determine how they relate to the quality of instructional leadership practices and the quality of the learning environment in center-based early childhood programs.

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social and emotional development has been considered an important factor in child development which has been placed at the end of the learning spectrum due to high stakes testing. This study examined the relationship between Hispanic children’s prekindergarten social and emotional development and their academic success. Hispanic children from a large southeastern city whose parents were receiving subsidized child-care were followed from their prekindergarten year through third grade (N=1,978). Several …

There is strong consensus among early childhood professionals that sound administrative practices in center-based programs help ensure high-quality learning opportunities for young children. Since its publication in 2004, the Program Administration Scale (PAS) has been used across the country to reliably measure and improve center-based leadership and management practices.1 Data from these initiatives have been compiled to provide a window into the administrative practices of a large, national sample of center-based programs.

Using Scenarios To Train Peer Mentors Online, Jenny Worsley, Pauline Taylor Dec 2009

Using Scenarios To Train Peer Mentors Online, Jenny Worsley, Pauline Taylor

Associate Professor Pauline Taylor-Guy

In 2007, a wholly-online Bachelor of Early Childhood Education degree was introduced into James Cook University School of Education's suite of pre-service teacher preparation programs. The online degree provides access and opportunity for (predominantly) women in the childcare or associated fields to gain qualifications as a teacher. The majority of students in the first and subsequent years of the program are mature-aged women with significant family and work commitments and have had little prior opportunity to engage in online technologies or in further education opportunities. The university has had a very successful face-to-face Peer Mentoring Program (PMP) for almost 20 …
