Fosces: Adding Another Library Tile To The Medical School Mosaic, Alexandra Gomes, Thomas Harrod

The 2014 launch of the revised medical school curriculum provided new opportunities for librarians to collaborate with faculty. Due to past informatics instruction in the first year curriculum, we were invited to expand this content as part of a new formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (FOSCE) initiative. This poster will describe the development and implementation of the FOSCE informatics curriculum.

In FOSCEs, small groups of students rotated through simulated patient encounters in order to demonstrate their clinical knowledge and skills. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Employment and Training Institute examined the driver’s license status of Wisconsin youth aged eighteen as of January 1, 2016, using license records from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles. Only 30% of Milwaukee eighteen-year-olds had a driver’s license (probationary or regular), compared to more than twice that rate (66%) for eighteen-year-olds statewide. Stark differences were seen in Wisconsin driver’s licensing rates by race/ethnicity, neighborhood levels of child poverty, and zipcodes with concentrations of “working poor” families. Disparate licensing rates give suburban and exurban youth in the Milwaukee metropolitan area a head start over …

At a southeast United States high school career center, career and technology education (CTE) programs failed to meet the state career and college readiness benchmarks. Meeting these benchmarks is necessary for students who transition from high school to the workplace or a postsecondary education program. Bandura's social learning theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. The purpose of this bounded, qualitative case study was to explore students' perspectives of their career and college readiness or nonreadiness after completing a CTE program. While little is known about parental beliefs and desires regarding LGBTQ-inclusive education, assumptions about these appear to justify teachers’, curriculum writers’ and policy makers’ silences regarding sexuality and gender diversity in the K-12 classroom. Thus, in order to better inform educators’ practices, this paper presents an analysis of interview data from focus groups with parents from across the Australian state of New South Wales. Findings highlight parents’ desires for LGBTQ-inclusivity, not only as a protective factor for sexuality and gender diverse students, but also to engender social cohesion and prepare all students for adult life in the modern social landscape. …

Agricultural Communications: A National Portrait Of Undergraduate Courses, Karen J. Cannon, Annie R. Specht, Emily B. Buck

Considerable research has been conducted regarding competencies needed by agricultural communication program graduates during the past four decades. However, no studies have considered actual program offerings. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze courses offered in agricultural communication programs in the United States. Using content analysis methods, researchers analyzed published course descriptions and discovered 21 categories among 172 courses. Most popular were writing courses, followed by courses introducing students to the major, internship courses, and writing for publication and graphic design courses. Categories with the fewest offerings included research, study abroad, and international focused courses. Findings from this analysis …
