Representations Of A Good Citizen: A Genealogy Of Power And Critical Investigation Of Pictographs, 1937-1942, Joselyn Naranjo
Representations Of A Good Citizen: A Genealogy Of Power And Critical Investigation Of Pictographs, 1937-1942, Joselyn Naranjo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study traced selected knowledge that influenced pictographs in social studies textbooks in the United States from 1937 through 1942. The qualitative study analyzed the messages in pictographs produced by Rudolf Modley’s business - Pictorial Statistics, Incorporated. The study interpreted the underlying ideological management within pictographs to present a method of analysis for future research on other visual educational material. Foucault’s (1980; 2003; Shiner, 1982) genealogy of power method addressed the different shifts in power and meaning making involved in communicating sociopolitical messages to the reader through pictographs while ideological management and governmentality informed Hsieh & Shannon’s (2005) directed content …
The Role Of Race In Urban Community-University Relationships: Moving From Interest Convergence To Critical Literacy, Jake D. Winfield, James Earl Davis
The Role Of Race In Urban Community-University Relationships: Moving From Interest Convergence To Critical Literacy, Jake D. Winfield, James Earl Davis
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
Recent decades have seen an increased involvement of institutions of higher education in their communities. Previous scholarship on community engaged scholarship and anchor institutions often fails to consider race, racism, and racial power dynamics. We analyze interviews with the program director of a critical community engaged scholarship initiative as part of a multi-year community-led collaboration between an urban, historically White institution and its adjacent community using the critical race theory tenet of interest convergence and critical literacy. We find that the university's relationship with the local community is troubling to residents, especially frequent student projects and university-initiated neighborhood safety initiatives. …
A Critical Literacy Approach To Student Affairs Education, Brian J. Reece, Ryan M. Rish
A Critical Literacy Approach To Student Affairs Education, Brian J. Reece, Ryan M. Rish
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This article argues for the use of critical literacy as a critical pedagogy in student affairs practice. The authors describe how some currents of the student affairs literature have shifted toward a focus on student learning and critical approaches to student development and learning. Subsequently, they discuss the social turn in our understanding of literacy and a related move toward critical approaches to understanding literacy as a social practice. Finally, they present a synthesis of the literature, which results in considerations for approaching higher education student affairs contexts through a critical literacy framework, exposing gaps and areas for future theorizing …
The Time Is Now: Building Educators’ Capacities To Teach For Social Justice And Equity, Felicia Baiden
The Time Is Now: Building Educators’ Capacities To Teach For Social Justice And Equity, Felicia Baiden
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
The recent killings of Black Americans namely Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Rayshard Brooks by police officers or vigilantes have increased racial tension and social unrest locally and nationally. Protests have ensued around the world for racial justice and equity. As educators, it is imperative now more than ever to examine and interrogate our education system and determine more equitable and socially just teaching practices that will better serve a culturally and linguistically diverse student population and ultimately contribute toward the public good of society. Research has suggested that educators need support and professional learning on how to …
Teacher Candidates’ Use Of Critical Literacy To Shift Thinking About Texts And Social Justice, Aimee Papola-Ellis
Teacher Candidates’ Use Of Critical Literacy To Shift Thinking About Texts And Social Justice, Aimee Papola-Ellis
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
It is essential to support teacher candidates in becoming culturally responsive and learning about social justice in the classroom as schools across the country become more culturally and linguistically diverse. In this qualitative study, the author looked at children’s literature as a way to support teacher candidates’ learning about critical literacy and social justice. Teacher candidates constructed an annotated bibliography of children’s texts centered around a topic of their choice. Findings suggest teachers increased their understanding and use of a critical literacy lens on the literature they selected and developed a deeper understanding of the potential connections between children’s texts …
A Critical Disability Studies Reading Of Beauty And The Beast: Détournement In Pedagogical Practice, Nicole Eilers
A Critical Disability Studies Reading Of Beauty And The Beast: Détournement In Pedagogical Practice, Nicole Eilers
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Disney’s interpretation of the fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, and the decisions made to include or exclude certain key elements of the original plot, provide insight into how ideas about what it means to be human have changed over time. Specifically, a critical disability studies reading of Beauty and the Beast brings to light the taken-for-granted category of disability as a social construct, the ever-shifting indicators of an individual’s normality/Otherness, and the socio-historical context that results in such distinctions. The intent of this paper is to (1) explain the theoretical framework behind a détournement, or counter-text, I created …
Engaging Middle School Emergent Bilinguals In Language Awareness: A Practitioner Researcher Study, Carol Lickenbrock
Engaging Middle School Emergent Bilinguals In Language Awareness: A Practitioner Researcher Study, Carol Lickenbrock
Dissertations
This practitioner research study (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009) traced the journey toward critical literacy of a group of seven emergent bilinguals and me, their teacher, over the course of a four-month unit on argument as part of our English for Speakers of Other Languages 3 (ESOL3) class. Many of these students, like many emergent bilinguals in the United States, had been disempowered because they had not had access to the academic texts of school. As part of this research, students worked with tools of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to analyze the interpersonal, ideational and textual metafunctions of argumentation in lessons …

Preparing Preservice Teachers To Be Critical Literacy Educators : Co-Constructing An Early Childhood Critical Literacy Junk Art Club, Angela F. Pack
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This qualitative practitioner action research study examines the process of a teacher educator’s attempt to prepare three preservice teachers to be critical literacy educators. Prior to the study, the teacher educator and the three preservice teachers took part in a critical literacy workshop where they unpacked their relationship with literacy and power. The three preservice teachers then worked together to co-construct a Junk Art Club with the teacher educator for kindergarten, first-, and second-graders. Through the co-planning and co-constructing of a Junk Art Club, the study sought to answer the following questions: What happens when I, an early childhood teacher …

“My Heart Was Like, Write About This. There's No Other Way.”: Strengthening And Deepening Literacy Skills Of Adults In A High School Equivalency Program Through Creative Writing, Elizabeth Santiago
Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative study investigates how creative writing plays a role in strengthening and deepening literacy skills of adults in community-based high school equivalency diploma programs, which are operated under the publicly funded, adult basic education umbrella. Specifically, the study explores two sub-questions: How can creative writing processes support adult high school equivalency students’ achievement of personal and/or academic goals? How does a curricular focus on individual storytelling build students’ literacy confidence and/or their sense of student agency? Data sources includes pre- and post-surveys, pre- and post-interviews, field notes, and student work based on a curriculum designed using best practices in …

Artists As Catalysts: The Ethical And Political Possibilities Of Teaching Artists In Literacy Classrooms, Anne Crampton, Cynthia Lewis
Woodring Scholarship on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Purpose This study aims to discuss the ethical and political possibilities offered by the presence of teaching artists (TAs) and visual artwork in racially and culturally diverse high school literacy (English Language Arts) classrooms. Design/methodology/approach This study explores episodes from two separate ethnographic studies that were conducted in one teacher’s critical literacy classroom across a span of several years. This study uses a transliteracies approach (Stornaiulo et al., 2017) to think about “meaning-making at the intersection of human subjects and materials” (Kontovourki et al., 2019); the study also draws on critical scholarship on art and making (Ngo et al., 2017; …
The Use Of Critical Literacy Methods To Teach For Democratic Consciousness, Tavia Quaid
The Use Of Critical Literacy Methods To Teach For Democratic Consciousness, Tavia Quaid
The Edna L. Sterling Collection
This action research study was initiated out of my concern that secondary education was heavily focused on career preparation rather than citizenship and student participation in the democratic process. An interest in how critical literacy teaching methods could increase student democratic consciousness prompted the three-cycle critical action research design. The foundation for the study was critical theory. Critical theorists, in particular seminal writer Paulo Freire (1970), have addressed goals for education that develop student inquiry and analysis of how different types of power are portrayed by writers, thus identifying the key components of critical literacy. Social constructivist Lev Vygotsky (1934/1997) …

The participants in the study were part of a program that addressed the needs of children and youth aged four to fourteen. This study foregrounded collaborative critical literacy practices that promoted engagement with topics relevant to their lives. This study is informed by a belief in critical literacy and community organizing as tools to change the world. The children and the youth drew on a …
Engendering Empathy For Immigrants In Middle Grade Readers Through Culturally Relevant Young Adult Literature, Amy J. Cattapan
Engendering Empathy For Immigrants In Middle Grade Readers Through Culturally Relevant Young Adult Literature, Amy J. Cattapan
Dissertations
This dissertation uncovered the ways through which culturally relevant young adult literature (YAL) engenders empathy for immigrants in middle grade readers. Empathy was displayed through both affective and cognitive responses and resulted in mirror and window moments (Bishop, 1990) as well as crystallizing experiences. Their empathetic responses led students to apply critical literacy skills to issues related to stereotypes, racism, discrimination, and immigration policies.
I conducted a qualitative case study to examine the ways in which reading and discussing YAL about immigrants created empathy in eighth graders in a culturally and linguistically diverse middle school and in what ways it …
