Unequal Englishes In A Chinese College English Textbook: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Jing He, Adcharawan Buripakdi
International Journal for Research in Education
The phenomenon of Unequal Englishes pervades Chinese contexts; however, more can be done to find out how it is embedded in Chinese college English textbooks. A study of Chinese college English listening and speaking textbooks shows that there are only few surface manifestations of Unequal Englishes in these textbooks which might be explained by the Chinese government’s deliberate ideological control of English learning, thus confirming profound political influences on the production of English textbooks in China to a certain degree. The Language and Literacy Spectrum
This qualitative inquiry examines how a White literacy teacher learns from and with a Black girl through multimodal composing in an out-of-school, alternative learning context. Data collection instruments include field observations, teacher planning sheets, teacher reflections, and researcher feedback. Multimodal Literacy Pedagogy and Black Girls’ Digital Literacies drove this study. Critical Discourse Analysis was employed to interpret the data. This inquiry accounts for the factors that reposition the role of a literacy teacher while working with a Black girl’s digital story development process. The present study aims to provide a critical discourse analysis of the persuasion tactics, power distribution, and the ideological stands in the American presidential debates of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The methodology adopted in this study was based on Fairclough's model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (1995). The thorough analysis of the debates revealed strong dichotomy and contested ideological stands, dissimilar power distribution, and the use of varying persuasive tools of both candidates on all the issues of concern such as immigration, economy, human rights, etc. The author recommends further investigation of the presidential debates across varying cultures based …

English Language Teachers’ Conceptions Of Intercultural Empathy And Professional Identity: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Maggie Mcalinden
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
English language teaching is intercultural in nature, and like all human activity, involves emotion and emotional understanding. Empathy is a means through which people can understand and express concern and care for one another. This article focuses on findings from a qualitative study that explored intercultural empathy in a culturally and linguistically diverse educational setting in Australia. A constructivist grounded theory research design was combined with Critical Discourse Analysis to develop theory inductively. An interpretation of the data as Discourse found connections and tensions in participants’ conceptions of themselves as empathic, interculturally effective teachers.

The five-paragraph essay continues to make headlines in composition and pedagogy journals and on teacher listservs. This long-cherished genre has been touted for teaching the basics to writers in college, and teachers often claim that it is the best foundation for solid essay writing. In contrast, there are numerous five-paragraph essay critics who claim that the essay is a “school-created thing” that has no real-world value and persists due to an enshrinement in textbooks as preparation for objective standardized testing.
