The purpose of this study is to determine if organizational stress, measured by role conflict and role ambiguity, predicts burnout among employees. A review of the related literature identified variables that demonstrate a relationship with burnout, supported by the Maslach (1998) theory of burnout and Katz and Kahn’s (1966) organizational role theory. The researcher also examined whether organizational level and demographic variables (gender, education level, and job tenure) moderate the relationships between role conflict, role ambiguity, and burnout.

The poor retention of special education teachers negatively impacts student academic outcomes. Special education teachers commonly cite burnout as a primary reason for leaving the field; however, there is a deficit of literature available to validate claims concerning special educators and their level of burnout. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: Educators' Survey using a sample of 349 special education teachers from schools across the nation (201 resource room special education teachers and 148 self-contained special education teachers). This study used a quantitative correlational method to examine the correlation between self-care, burnout, compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress among higher education faculty members across multiple disciplines. One hundred and fifty-one participants from two higher education institutions and Listservs provided feedback for the study. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire and two surveys, the National Alliance in Mental Illness Self-care instrument and the Professional Quality of Life scale. Results showed collectively significant results between self-care and burnout, compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress. Special education teacher (SET) burnout is a complex problem impacting teacher health, student outcomes, and job satisfaction. This review examined burnout literature with special education teachers as participants in US studies between 1973-2020. Studies reviewed support SET burnout as an interaction between personal and occupational variables. Overall, it is likely that each burnout component is influenced by a different set of internal and external factors. The most supported factors for SET burnout were perception, role conflict, role ambiguity, and administrator support. The present study adopted a demands and resources conceptual framework to identify and compare the most critical demands and resources, both internal and external, for academic success and well-being of traditional and second career undergraduate students, as well as graduate engineering students.
