Changes in federal regulations regarding phonics instruction show that there is an ongoing problem concerning early reading difficulties. This research looks at how the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons reading program can benefit phonics skills and phonemic awareness of first graders who are not yet reading.

This qualitative research explored how Year 12 achievement data were used by school personnel to inform practice within seven Catholic secondary schools. Deputy Principals of Curriculum from participating schools were interviewed regarding their perceptions of the improvement of Year 12 student achievement outcomes, and their insights into how to strengthen future efforts (or achievements). Three key insights included: Communication of achievement data to key stakeholders in the school community, strategic use of achievement data by teaching staff, and leadership strategies to promote an achievement culture to the students. Interventions Addressing Chronic Absenteeism, James M. Brookins

This study was conducted at a single-school, rural, K–12, Oregon school district with an enrollment of approximately 240. An action research methodology investigated the attitudes and perceptions of chronically absent students and their parents concerning factors that influenced attendance and absence. A sample of 20 students and 20 parents represented 80% of the eligible population and 9 of the 13 grades. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews, which were conducted before and after the first trimester of the 2015–2016 school year. Interventions during the trimester included daily attendance monitoring, parent contact for absences, check-ins, student self-tracking of attendance, and incentives. …

Two instructors report their experience co-teaching an online action research (AR) course required as part of an e-learning master’s degree. Adopting a practice-centered stance we focus on the course activities of participants (instructors and students), with particular attention to the careful crafting of course elements with the goal of achieving an excellent learning experience for students. The case narrative describes the course and ways in which we have modified the course based on a variety of considerations. We also outline problems and areas still in need of improvement. In today’s world of accountability and budgeting constraints, schools are examining how they get the most “bang for their buck” in the area of professional development experiences. Professional development has traditionally been used to keep teachers and administrators abreast of current teaching strategies. In using the traditional model of professional development, typically the school or district would have a speaker, who was knowledgeable on a random topic of education, come in and conduct a one-day seminar.
