Trust In Academia: How Chief Academic Officers Build And Maintain Faculty Trust, Marc A. Smithers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the role of academic leadership has grown more complex, particularly as leaders are increasingly tasked with leading educational innovation initiatives, building faculty trust has become an essential task for chief academic officers (CAOs). Due to the general lack of research into this role, though, little is known about how they understand and approach building faculty trust. The purpose of this qualitative, single, holistic case study was to understand how executive academic administrators at private colleges approach building and maintaining trust with their faculty in general and also through educational innovation and what specific challenges they have identified in these …

Emotional Intelligence During A Punctuated Equilibrium, Eric R. Kapuza
Emotional Intelligence During A Punctuated Equilibrium, Eric R. Kapuza
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
A punctuated equilibrium refers to periods of stability, with little or no change, disrupted by a punctuated period of rapid and dramatic change. A non-experimental quantitative research design investigated the degree of influence that emotional intelligence exerted upon predicting leadership ability and job satisfaction for school administrators during the punctuated equilibrium initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF) was disseminated electronically and completed by 33 school administrators from a variety of academic institutions. Study participant perceptions of emotional intelligence were statistically significantly predictive of self-perceived effectual leadership during a punctuated equilibrium. The predictive effect …

Breaking Through The Sexed Glass Ceiling: Women In Academic Leadership Positions, Sheila Smith Mckoy, Dawn Michelle Banauch, Keisha Love, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
In 2009, Patterson, Kirschke, Seaton and Hossfeld revisited the ongoing conversation about gender inequity and inequality in higher education. Their work entitled Challenges for Women Department Chairs (New Prairie Press, 2009) focused on the numerous gaps – salary, promotion, discrimination, harassment -- that define women’s experiences in academic leadership. The emerging trends in academia still suggest that the work that they started in 2009 continues to be a vital concern for women in academic leadership positions. Very little research exists in relation to the intersectional conversations that need to occur when these gendered gaps are coupled with other aspects of …

This workshop is highly interactive with numerous exercises, role-plays, breakout discussions and departmental inventories. It will introduce the concept of positive academic leadership from a number of different perspectives. First, it will explore why academic leaders today so …

The Thoughtful Development Of Others: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Developmental Relationships On Chief Academic Officers In Higher Education, Heidi M. Sherick
The Thoughtful Development Of Others: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Developmental Relationships On Chief Academic Officers In Higher Education, Heidi M. Sherick
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Higher education rarely develops the capacity of its leaders in an intentional way (Eckel & Hartley, 2011). “Colleges and universities, unlike many similarly sized corporations, do not view talent development as a strategic priority” (Eckel & Hartley, 2011, p. 29). The complexity of higher education, as well as the increased demands and challenges, require better prepared leaders. Despite this need, there is little research on informal one-on-one leadership development tactics in higher education. To understand how leadership is fostered informally, this study focused on developmental relationships in higher education. Specifically, this study examined the role developmental relationships, and the functions …

Community College Academic Leadership: Examining Effective Leadership Teams, Walter J. Fronczek
Dissertations
In community colleges across the country, the division of academic affairs faces many challenges. Chief academic affairs officers (CAAOs) and academic-leadership teams need to effectively lead the division. Academic deans support the division of academic affairs, and the CAAO provides guidance and resources, and empower individuals in these roles to be effective. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with the formation of an effective academic-leadership team in selected Illinois community colleges.
This qualitative study applied case-study methodology. Eight Illinois community colleges were selected using the Illinois Community College Board’s seven peer groups. Purposeful sampling, in conjunction …
