Sexual health education has long been evolving, and while a mountain of research has built a compelling case for continuing its improvement, the authors of the present paper were interested in evaluating the efficacy of state education standards in 2009, 2014, and 2019 on a multitude of sexual health outcomes in 2019. We concluded that throughout all three years, states with higher educational requirements could in fact produce better health outcomes, but those outcomes were heavily targeting delaying pregnancy. Background: Historically, sexual education in the United States has been abstinence-based (ABSE), meaning that sexual education is centered around encouraging adolescents to abstain from sexual activity outside of wedlock. On the other hand, evidence-based sexual education (EBSE) includes abstinence in its curriculum but does not emphasize it, instead highlighting contraception and prevention strategies. Additionally, EBSE teaches adolescents about healthy relationships, attitudes towards sexuality, gender roles, and provides resources for sexual and reproductive health services. Premarital Sex In College Students: Factors That Influence Their Attitudes And Practices, Kara Nonnemacher, Chi-En Hwang, Leah Furrow

Sex education continues to be a controversial topic in the United States. This study examines the relationship between sex education styles and actual sexual practices of students from several Midwest universities (n=1042). More specifically, this study looks at the difference in effectiveness between parent and teacher sex education, the effectiveness of safe sex education, and the sexual behavior perceptions of those who practice abstinence. Results showed that parents had a greater influence over their children than school-based sex education, that safe sex education promotes protected sex, and that the perceived acceptance of non-intercourse sexual behavior correlates negatively with abstinence education.
