Since children spend many hours of the day in the classroom, understanding the impact the classroom environment has on children’s well-being is important. However, existing research on learning environments has predominantly focused on overall school climate, and additional research investigating classroom climate is warranted. The main objective of this study was to determine whether a positive classroom climate serves as a protective factor for children at heightened risk for worry and peer problems, and those with low social-emotional functioning and high exposure to childhood adversity. A total of 429 grade 3 students within 41 classrooms in 19 schools self-reported their …

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic added a layer of challenge and complexity to the implementation of school-based social-emotional learning (SEL) programs such as MindUP. As we move forward and work to remediate some of the adverse consequences of the pandemic, prioritizing SEL programs such as MindUP will be a critical public health measure. As such, understanding the experiences of educators who implemented MindUP during the pandemic is critical to promote both the sustainability of MindUP and evidence-based programming in the face of future school disruptions. Using a mixed-methods study design data were collected from educators using surveys (n=59) and …

School disengagement is associated with many negative consequences including substance use, delinquency, and dropping out. Understanding school disengagement can help provide targeted prevention and intervention strategies for students at risk. Currently, the impact of interpersonal trauma and polyvictimization on student engagement is not fully understood. To address this gap in the literature, data was obtained from 15402 clinically-referred children/youth (4 to 18-years-old) across the Province of Ontario using the interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health Assessment. Findings revealed that school engagement problems were predicted by physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; neglect; witnessing domestic violence; and polyvictimization. However, there was no …

Reading Strategy Intervention And Reading Comprehension Success In Bilingual Readers, Bailey Frid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Previous research has found that specific reading strategies predict reading comprehension success in bilingual readers (Frid & Friesen, 2020; Friesen & Frid, 2021). Yet, the pattern in which readers recruit these strategies has not been investigated. In the first study, the patterns of strategy recruitment used by skilled vs. poor bilingual readers was analyzed with previously collected think-aloud data. Results showed that skilled bilingual readers recruit a variety of strategies, they pair necessary inferences with other strategies and utilize comprehension monitoring strategies. In contrast, poor readers perseverate on specific strategies, recruit fewer strategies in total and make more incorrect statements. …
