The challenges for immigrants in the US and Canada include the difficulties of making a living while raising their children. Due to the high cost of living and childcare in cities, along with the realities of low paying jobs and long working hours among many working-class immigrants, growing numbers of families send their infant children to their countries of origin to be raised by relatives for a few years. When the children reach school age, they are returned to their parents in the US. Prior research has focused on immigrant parents’ decision-making rationale and their reports of adjustments that children …

Syrian Children’S Perceived Integration Into Turkish National Education System, Nurgul Bekdemir, Gulce Kalayci, Nuray Alagozlu
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This study is conducted to analyze Syrian children’s educational life from the perspective of the teachers and explore their acculturation process, and adaptation into the Turkish culture with reference to the difficulties. Moreover, the study will take into account their academic attainment as well as the implemented bilingual education model. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data as it enables a scrupulous analysis when there is not much detailed information on the topic. Thematic analysis was conducted as the qualitative research design is required to explore and identify the academic achievement and social adaptation process of Syrian students in …
Beyond Language And Academics: Investigating Teachers’ Preparation To Promote The Social-Emotional Well-Being Of Emergent Bilingual Learners, Amy J. Heineke, Elizabeth Vera
Beyond Language And Academics: Investigating Teachers’ Preparation To Promote The Social-Emotional Well-Being Of Emergent Bilingual Learners, Amy J. Heineke, Elizabeth Vera
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
In recent years, institutions have responded to changing school populations by preparing teachers for the growing number of emergent bilingual learners (EBLs). But this preparation largely focuses on supporting students’ academic learning and language development, despite enhanced attention to social-emotional well-being in wider educational circles. This comparative case study seeks to understand whether and how teachers are prepared to facilitate this integral component of student learning in five schools with linguistically diverse populations and varied program models to serve EBLs. We first probe how teachers draw from various facets of their preparation to support EBLs’ social-emotional well-being, including teacher education, …
High-Stakes Education: Dual Language Immersion In Portland, Oregon, Andrew Maclean
High-Stakes Education: Dual Language Immersion In Portland, Oregon, Andrew Maclean
University Honors Theses
This paper provides evidence and background information to support the claim that Dual Language Immersion (DLI) is the optimal k-12 education program to reduce the achievement gap between English Language Learners and native speakers of English, while also providing extraordinary benefit for Foreign Language Learners in the United States. This paper draws on Second Language Acquisition theory and recent education policy to show that the language situation in the United States would benefit greatly from the continued and amplified support of Dual Language Immersion programs over other programs like monolingual English immersion, transitional bilingual immersion, and developmental bilingual immersion. The …
Raising Awareness Of Bilingual Education: A Website And Resource For Immigrant Parents, Lesi Wang
Raising Awareness Of Bilingual Education: A Website And Resource For Immigrant Parents, Lesi Wang
Master's Projects and Capstones
Under the influence of English Only Movement (Macedo, 2000), bilingual education has been neglected for 18 years in California from Proposition 227 in 1998 to Proposition 58 in 2016. This leads to a result that many immigrant parents were not aware of the importance of bilingual education and have passive attitudes and perceptions towards bilingual education. For example, some immigrant parents think that English is more important than their home language, or that learning their home language will significantly hinder their children’s English acquisition. Yet, according to the three-generation shift suggested by Baker and Wright (2017), immigrant families will often …
Liberating Instruction: A Critical Bilingual Literacy Approach For Latinx Students, Anel V. Suriel
Liberating Instruction: A Critical Bilingual Literacy Approach For Latinx Students, Anel V. Suriel
Journal of Multilingual Education Research
This article reviews Dr. Carla España and Dr. Luz Yadira Herrera’s En Comunidad: Lessons for Centering the Voices of Experiences of Bilingual Latinx Students. Though a critical bilingual literacies approach, the language practices, experiences and cultural histories of Latinx students are centered for literacy instruction in grades 3-8. Before instruction begins, the authors support educational practitioners in creating equitable educational and language stances that hold students’ language practices in a strength perspective. Each chapter that follows details and explains a thematic unit of student that guides educators in creating lessons based on students’ experiences and are summarized within this review. …

Dual Language Effectiveness To Narrow Achievement Gaps: A Quantitative Correlational Study, Belinda Reyes Ed.D.
Dual Language Effectiveness To Narrow Achievement Gaps: A Quantitative Correlational Study, Belinda Reyes Ed.D.
Journal of English Learner Education
An increase in the English learner (EL) population is evident in public schools throughout the United States. Academic achievement gaps between ELs and non-EL peers persist from early childhood through the post-secondary level (Florida Department of Education, 2019c). The gap in the literature is the lack of studies analyzing the language acquisition of ELs enrolled in dual language programs to narrow the achievement gap of ELs. Transformative Learning Theory and the Dynamic Systems Theory are the foundation of the theoretical framework. Key research questions seek data on the relationship between standardized assessments measuring language acquisition and academic performance of third-grade …

¿Dónde Están? Exploring The Identification Process For Gifted English Language Learners, Angelita O. Vasquez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem this study addressed was the underrepresentation of ELLs in gifted and talented (GT) programs. The purpose of this case study was to explore teacher, parent, and administrator understandings of the identification process for the gifted and talented program in Gray ISD (pseudonym), in order to gain insights for improving the identification of ELLs for the GT program. The overall research question was: Based on their understandings of the GT identification process, what insights do teachers, parents, and administrators provide to improve the identification of ELLs for the GT program? With LatCrit theory serving as a theoretical framework, this …
The Effects Of Bilingual Education On Dual Language Learners' Academic Outcomes, Lauren Thayer
The Effects Of Bilingual Education On Dual Language Learners' Academic Outcomes, Lauren Thayer
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The population of dual language learners (DLLs) in the United States continues to grow. As the population grows, so does the need to research their unique development. Additionally, considerations for their education come to the forefront. This meta-analysis will analyze one option for DLLs – bilingual education programs. These programs offer the opportunity for DLLs to receive educational support in both of their languages. However, there has been controversy over the division of languages; specifically, concerns that children will not become proficient in the language of majority (e.g., English). This meta-analysis seeks to aggregate research on the effects of bilingual …

A Bilingual Advantage For Children With Autism: Effect Of A Bilingual Education On Set Shifting In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Chandler Flannery O'Reardon
A Bilingual Advantage For Children With Autism: Effect Of A Bilingual Education On Set Shifting In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Chandler Flannery O'Reardon
Senior Projects Spring 2021
The proposed study will examine the effect of an early bilingual school environment on the set shifting abilities of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). More specifically, it will evaluate how an English-French bilingual education program affects the set shifting abilities of children with ASD compared to a monolingual English education program. Set shifting will be measured by the Dimensional Change Card Sort (DCCS) task both before and after the respective education programs. I hypothesize that there will be a main effect of both time point and education program on set shifting abilities such that (a) set shifting abilities will …
