The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine how kindergarten teachers teach writing and their beliefs about writing instruction using survey methodology. Participants in this study included 78 kindergarten teachers in the United States. Results revealed that most kindergarten teachers used a balanced approach to writing instruction, combining instructional procedures from two common methods for teaching writing: skills instruction and process writing. The majority of kindergarten teachers devoted considerable time to writing instruction (36 min a day) and student writing (24 min a day) and used most of the instructional practices included in the survey to teach writing. These …

Connected Design Rationale: A Model For Measuring Design Learning Using Epistemic Network Analysis, Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens

Publications

Virtual learning environments have the potential to support students’ development of design skills in engineering education. However, few approaches exist for modeling and measuring design learning as it emerges in authentic practices, which often includes collaboration. This study merges learning sciences research with engineering design education to develop an approach for modeling and measuring design thinking. I propose a connected design rationale model which identifies relationships among design moves and rationale. Results from a qualitative examination of how professional engineers make connections among moves and rationales were used as the foundation to examine students in virtual internships. Using digital collaborative …

Publications

This study aimed to examine the reflection and development of a multimodal composition exploring the topic of professional identity formation in a teacher education program of teaching English as a Foreign language (EFL). Using a social design experiment, this study examined the process of a key participant. Three themes were identified: (1) iterations through her composition, (2) critical examination of readings, and (3) giving and receiving feedback. This study contributes to a nuanced conceptualization of reflection through multimodal composition when mediating reflection in identity work in EFL teacher learning.

Using A Connected Learning Framework To Promote Democratic Education During A Transition To Online Learning, Abigail H. Baker, Jennifer L. Kassimer

Publications

In this essay, we discuss how a Connected Learning (CL) approach to education can offer students and teachers a democratic framework to follow when designing instruction, especially with the recent shift to online and hybrid instruction due to the global pandemic. We present literature on the opportunities and challenges of transitioning to online instruction in the midst of the pandemic. We then discuss how the CL framework promotes a democratic approach to teaching and learning. Finally, we offer guidance on how to design a unit or lesson plan using a CL framework to provide both a connected and democratic learning …

At the core of an effective model-based inquiry (MBI) unit is a scientifically rich, complex phenomenon that serves as the reason for engagement and drives student sensemaking and investigations throughout the unit. Engaging in iterative attempts to explain phenomena over the course of an MBI unit allows the opportunity for students to construct evidence-based explanations that are refined over time with various science practices. We provide an example of using MBI as an instructional model to facilitate students’ conceptual understanding of chemical reactions.

Alternative Practicum Experiences For Early Childhood Preservice Teachers, Qianyi Gao, Sandra Linder, Anna H. Hall

Publications

Practicum experiences are an integral part of teacher education programs. The current study drew on perceptions of various stakeholders (preservice teachers, cooperating teachers, and university professors) to examine two practicum models of an early childhood teacher education program. The study focused on the structure of a senior-level practicum and highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of two specific models. Findings showed that both cohorts of preservice teachers experienced stress and confidence boosts during the practicum, but each cohort underwent different learning experiences due to variances in the practicum structures. Cooperating teachers and university professors preferred the new model which allowed preservice …

A Team-Based Liaison Approach To Science Coverage, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Maggie Albro, Jennifer Groff Jan 2021

A Team-Based Liaison Approach To Science Coverage, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Maggie Albro, Jennifer Groff

Publications

Liaison librarianship is an evolving specialty area in academic librarianship in which success is heavily dependent upon long-term relationship building between departments and librarians. In times of turnover and change the success of the liaison model is threatened due to the lack of continued staffing in liaison roles. This paper presents a case study of a team-based liaison coverage model for STEM fields during an extended period of turnover and change. Without this shared approach to liaison and functional duties, it would not be possible for only three people to provide service to over 14,000 patrons across multiple colleges.

Quantitative Ethnography (QE) is an emerging methodological approach that combines ethnographic and statistical tools to analyze both Big Data and smaller data to study human behavior and interactions. This paper presents a methodological scoping review of 60 studies employing QE approaches with an intention to characterize and establish where the boundaries of QE might and should be in order to establish the identity of the field. The key finding is that QE researchers have enough commonality in their approach to the analysis of human behavior with a strong focus on grounded analysis, the validity of codes and consistency between quantitative …

Scaling Professional Development: Integrity Of Implementation As A Measurement Approach, Brooke A. Whitworth, Lori Rubino-Hare, Nena E. Bloom

Publications

Professional learning about an innovative teaching method is a demonstrated way to improve teacher practices, and ultimately impact student learning. One way to scale up professional learning is a facilitator development model, in which professional learning and development (PLD) designers prepare facilitators to understand the innovation and they in turn, teach teachers. To understand the effectiveness of this model, identifying how facilitators implement the model with teachers is critical. As such, the Power of Data (POD) team scaled-up effective PLD by providing Facilitation Academies to teach others to facilitate POD Teacher Workshops (TWs). The expectation was that changes based on …
