Teacher Perceptions Of Personalized Teaching & Learning In An Instructional Technology Graduate Course: A Phenomenographical Case Study, Stephanee Stephens

Doctor of Education in Instructional Technology Dissertations

With the growing focus and popularity of personalized learning in K-12 education, the need to support educators in their ability to implement personalized learning pedagogy grows. The paradigm shift towards personalized learning includes necessary iteration to the types of professional development offered to practicing teachers. This study explored the perceptions of teachers experiencing the meta-learning phenomenon of both teaching and learning about Personalized Learning (PL) in a six-week, online graduate-level course. Inquiry was focused on uncovering how in-service K-12 teachers' experience, understanding of PL, and ability to design PL evolve during a six-week graduate-level education course on personalized learning, ITEC …

Students’ Meaning-Making Journeys Towards Self-Authorship Through Self-Designed Gap Year Experiences, Erin Garcia Dec 2020

Students’ Meaning-Making Journeys Towards Self-Authorship Through Self-Designed Gap Year Experiences, Erin Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This phenomenological, qualitative study addressed student perceptions of their meaning-making process towards self-authorship in a self-designed gap year experience and was conducted in a public higher educational institution in the Southeast. Data was gathered through interviews from a purposeful sample of gap year program participants and program administrators. Emerging themes and categories were identified by coding and analyzing the interview data, such as continual reflection reinforces the value of individual meaning-making, self-expectations versus self-worth, the influence of societal expectations are minimized, and self-designed learning helps to solidify changes in self-authorship. The data showed a strong connection between multiple meaning-making contexts …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since 2013, the number of publications on flipped learning within chemistry have steadily increased. However, most of these studies focus on flipped course reforms within individual institutions, while the outcomes of any learning environment are dependent on how the environment is structured and the degree to which students interact with its elements. In this study, we apply a coordinated set of assessment practices to investigate similarities among flipped chemistry courses at five institutions in the United States. All courses in the study followed the two basic tenets of flipped learning: (1) foundational information was delivered through preclass materials (PCMs), and …

First-Semester Organic Chemistry During Covid-19: Prioritizing Group Work, Flexibility, And Student Engagement, Leslie A. Nickerson, Kevin M. Shea Jan 2020

First-Semester Organic Chemistry During Covid-19: Prioritizing Group Work, Flexibility, And Student Engagement, Leslie A. Nickerson, Kevin M. Shea

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Our first-semester organic chemistry class focused on structured group work to enable active learning in class. When Smith College switched to online learning after spring break, the class was adapted to fit into an online learning model while retaining active learning. Using feedback from students, we implemented two tracks, one focused on independent work and one focused on group work. Using Zoom’s breakout rooms, we were able to simulate the full class and small group experiences of our in-person class with the help of student learning assistants to facilitate group learning. Slack was introduced for class questions and communications. Student …

Perceptions Of Middle School Teachers’ Experiences With Student-Centered Learning Strategies, Lucy Judith Plaisir Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Middle School Teachers’ Experiences With Student-Centered Learning Strategies, Lucy Judith Plaisir

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teachers in the local research site are using student-centered learning (SCL) strategies as an instructional pedagogy to support students’ learning. However, they are experiencing barriers in implementing SCL strategies consistently. The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of the barriers that prevent SCL strategies from being implemented consistently at a middle school in the Northeastern United States to support students’ learning. The conceptual framework used for this qualitative study was Schlossberg’s transitional theory. Data were gathered through semistructured interviews with 15 participants who taught at a middle school and used SCL strategies for at least 5 years. …

A Comparative Study Of Leadership And Management In Rural Schools Achieving Above Predicted Graduation Outcomes, Brian David Rhode

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

School systems are expected to demonstrate outcomes that are equitable for all students. Despite an abundance of educational legislation aimed at raising all students’ achievement, gaps persist, especially among critical populations such as economically disadvantaged, English language learners, African-American and Hispanic/Latino students. This study is a comparative study of leadership and management in positive outlier schools and typically performing high schools, the first type has demonstrated a trend of above-predicted graduation outcomes for rural youth.
