A Case Study Of Academic Performance In A K-8 School Model, Jamie North Sep 2020

A Case Study Of Academic Performance In A K-8 School Model, Jamie North

Dissertations

The historical and current dispute on how to educate middle grade students continues to puzzle today’s leaders of school systems nationwide. As a result of conflicting research on academically high performing schools, scholars and school decision makers continue the discussion on the influence of grade span configurations on academic performance. The purpose of my mixed method case study was to explore how teachers and school principals perceive the role of collective efficacy as influencing academic performance for grade eight students in the school under study. My study obtained input from school principals, district leaders, and teachers guided by the following …

Causal Comparative Study: The Effect Of School Scheduling And Academic Outcomes Of Economically Disadvantaged Students, Marcus D. Brannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate if a statistical variance exists between traditional and A/B block school scheduling, and the effect on economically disadvantaged student achievement on the English I and Algebra I End-of-Course STAAR state-mandated exam, from 2015-2018. In response to studies illuminating the achievement gap, educational leaders in Texas implemented block scheduling in order to improve student outcomes among high school students. However, to date, published research studies yield mixed results of the effectiveness block scheduling has made on student achievement. The findings are expected to help to fill the gap in published literature, which focuses on the …

The Impact Of Texas Aim On Academic Performance In Detx, Nicoli Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School- and community-based after-school programs have evolved within the last 10 to 14 years, to accommodate and reinforce primary education (Mahoney, Larson, Eccles, & Lord, 2005). Students who are enrolled in after-school programs (e.g., Boys and Girls Club, Solid Foundation) have made higher grades in the classroom than their same age/grade peers who are not enrolled in after-school programs (Fredricks, Hackett, & Bregman, 2010). Additionally, after-school programs increase students’ self-esteem and confidence (Fredricks et al., 2010). The Boys and Girls Club organization has a strong devotion to their members’ academic success in the school setting (“Boys and Girls Clubs of …

The Impact Of Suspension On The Academic Performance Of Middle School Students, Jennifer Nelson May 2020

The Impact Of Suspension On The Academic Performance Of Middle School Students, Jennifer Nelson

Theses and Dissertations from 2020

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of in-school suspension and out of school suspension on the academic performance of seventh-grade students, as measured by the ACT Aspire. This study was motivated by the assumption that out of classroom time and out of school time has an impact on student learning. It was further assumed that direct instruction from the classroom teacher would enhance students’ learning; and, therefore, suspensions would have a negative impact on student achievement. This quantitative causal-comparative study used four research questions to examine the relationship between suspensions and academic performance of middle school …

Identifying The Relationship Between Supplementary Educational Tools And Black Undergraduate Academic Performance, Joiliana Lecointe Apr 2020

Identifying The Relationship Between Supplementary Educational Tools And Black Undergraduate Academic Performance, Joiliana Lecointe

Honors Theses

What is the relationship between supplementary educational tools and the success of undergraduate minority students of Black descent at Andrews University? About a third of all students who attend a private, non-profit, four-year college or university do not complete a degree in six years (Digest of Education Statistics, 2017). Andrews University is a Seventh-Day Adventist, private university, and thus is able to provide a greater quality of education as compared to public colleges and universities (Scholarships.com, 2020). This is reflected in higher six-year graduation rates of private universities, as well as higher grade point averages. Unfortunately, minorities, and specifically Black …

Types Of Social Support In Distance Education And Academic Performance At A Southwestern Historically Black College And University, Jennifer Paige Miles

Online Theses and Dissertations

As a result of rapid growth in distance education, increasingly more students are enrolling in online courses. Nearly 81% of all U.S. postsecondary institutions offered “at least one fully online or blended course” in 2003 (Jones & Davenport, 2018). Previous research has demonstrated African American students site “convenience” as an influence in enrolling in an online course (Kwun et al., 2012). While online learning offers benefits to both institutions and students (Anderson, 2008), research has also found students may exhibit stress and anxiety as a result of isolation and loneliness caused by distance learning (Duranton & Mason, 2012; Heinman, 2008; …
