Text sets with nine different categories of diversity were created and thirty-nine books were included for educators to use within classrooms. Using the theory of mirrors, windows, and doors for examining diversity in books guided the books to include within the text sets so that all students can see themselves represented or learn about others that are different from them. Key influences included Larrick for one of the first studies on diversity within children’s books, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center …

Shifting Literacy Methods And Teaching Practices To Improve Equity In Schools For Black Girls, Danae Ross

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Throughout the United States’ history, Black girls and women have found themselves as one of America’s most oppressed groups due to the systemic discrimination of both their race and gender. This problem still persists today and has made schools a place for oppression against Black girls from the time they enter the school system in kindergarten, creating low self-esteem, a feeling of alienation, and a disdain for the school system. Identifying Reading Interventions Appropriate For Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities In Inclusive Classroom Settings, Mary Douthitt

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question addressed in this Capstone project was, what are effective reading interventions for middle school students with learning disabilities that will enable them to achieve academic progress in an inclusive classroom? Including students with learning disabilities in the general education setting can improve outcomes in self-perception, social relationships, and academic achievement, but providing effective instruction in an inclusive setting is complex. Differentiating Literacy Instruction Through Guided Reading, Emily Clare Ringquist Aug 2020

Differentiating Literacy Instruction Through Guided Reading, Emily Clare Ringquist

Culminating Experience Projects

Research reiterates how instilling a strong reading foundation in young students is vital to their growth in the future. Today, students need more support and individualized education to meet the diverse needs students enter school with. Whole group reading instruction does not benefit students in comparison to differentiated instruction. In order to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the students as well as provide scaffolds to enhance literacy, teachers must incorporate small group instruction such as guided reading groups.

Guided reading are groups of students around the same developmental level that showcase similar learning needs exploring books. Teachers work …

Engaging Middle School Emergent Bilinguals In Language Awareness: A Practitioner Researcher Study, Carol Lickenbrock Jul 2020

Engaging Middle School Emergent Bilinguals In Language Awareness: A Practitioner Researcher Study, Carol Lickenbrock

Dissertations

This practitioner research study (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009) traced the journey toward critical literacy of a group of seven emergent bilinguals and me, their teacher, over the course of a four-month unit on argument as part of our English for Speakers of Other Languages 3 (ESOL3) class. Many of these students, like many emergent bilinguals in the United States, had been disempowered because they had not had access to the academic texts of school. As part of this research, students worked with tools of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to analyze the interpersonal, ideational and textual metafunctions of argumentation in lessons …

Increasing English Language Students Pre-Literacy Skills In Preschool, Alyssa Henderson Jul 2020

Increasing English Language Students Pre-Literacy Skills In Preschool, Alyssa Henderson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Early literacy skills are a predictor of future reading and writing success. Whitehurst and Lonigan (1998) state that “Knowledge of the alphabet at entry into school is one of the strongest single predictors of short- and long-term literacy success” (p. 851). Students that enter kindergarten with early literacy skills are more likely to succeed in reading and writing as they progress through school. There are always students who leave preschool without adequate literacy skills, having made little progress throughout the year. Many times this includes English Language students making little growth. Han et al. (2013) states that EL students are …

Effective Vocabulary Instruction And Literacy Levels: An Online Course Provided For Classroom Teachers, Brittany Johannsen Jul 2020

Effective Vocabulary Instruction And Literacy Levels: An Online Course Provided For Classroom Teachers, Brittany Johannsen

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Vocabulary knowledge has been identified as one of the best predictors of reading comprehension. Research shows that there is a great disparity between ELs and non-ELs’ knowledge of vocabulary. This disparity leads to a larger gap that we as teachers need to fill for our ELs to be more successful in acquiring vocabulary and improve their overall literacy levels. In an effort to help teachers close this gap, I researched the question: How does vocabulary instruction improve ELs’ F&P (Fountas & Pinnell) literacy levels? Reading is one content area that ELs tend to find challenges with. One reason being, the …

Exploring The Academic And Social Challenges Of Students With Limited And Interrupted Formal Education (Slife) In Ontario, Hawa Yusuf Osman Jun 2020

Exploring The Academic And Social Challenges Of Students With Limited And Interrupted Formal Education (Slife) In Ontario, Hawa Yusuf Osman

Major Papers

Since 2010, Ontario’s education system has taken in an increasing number of students from refugee families, many of whom have limited literacy and numeracy skills and are classified as students with limited and interrupted formal education (SLIFE). To ensure the success of these students, it is important to identify the most effective ways to address their unique learning needs. However, there is currently limited research on this subpopulation in Ontario. Therefore, in order to understand the academic challenges this subpopulation faces, a comprehensive literature review has been conducted with the purpose of establishing the issues that influence this phenomenon. Findings …

Valuing Voices: Construction Of Meaning Through Discursive Interactions During A Critical Service-Learning Partnership, Jane Helen Noble

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As teacher educators strive to prepare preservice teachers for careers as literacy instructors and advocates of social justice in education, critical service-learning pedagogy has been considered as an approach for teacher education programs. Tenets of academic study, reflective practice, social change, and the development of authentic relationships between universities and communities outline the structure for critical-based field experiences. What are preservice teachers learning in these spaces? How do they grow as part of critical service- learning courses? How do community organizations and members interpret experiences in the partnership, and how do they describe their roles?

This study highlights the voices …

Stories We Carry Into Classrooms: The Literacy Narratives Of Teachers Of Students With Complex Support Needs, Sharon L. Head

Special Education ETDs

In this study, I used a case-based narrative inquiry to investigate the literacy narratives and the thinking about instructional practices of four teachers of students with complex support needs (CSN) from a small, rural school district in the Southwestern United States. I conducted initial and follow-up interviews and facilitated two focus groups across an eight-week period using a process designed to look at teacher narratives across time and after interactions with peers. My data were in the form of transcripts of all interviews and focus groups that I analyzed using two analytic processes: thematic and narrative (Polkinghorne, 1995). I described …
