This study analyzes, interprets, and compares texts from different educational discourses. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis method, I reveal how texts from university mission statements and from commercial learning analytics providers communicate and construct different ideologies. To support this analysis, I explore literature strands related to public higher education in America and the emerging field of study and practice called learning analytics. Learning analytics has emerged as a data-driven way to improve learner outcomes over the past decade. However, as the adoption and implementation of learning analytics continues to surge, there are some significant barriers to this process, such as stakeholder buy-in, training, and support, concerns over privacy and ethical issues, the quality of tools provided by third-party vendors, and institutional capacity to collect and meaningfully analyze and interpret data. Poor implementation can increase inequities, squander public funding, foster stakeholder resistance around future initiatives, and ultimately lead to abandonment. Learning analytics focuses on extracting meaning from large amounts of data. One of the largest datasets in education comes from Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that typically feature enrollments in the tens of thousands. Analyzing MOOC discussion forums presents logistical issues, resulting chiefly from the size of the dataset, which can create challenges for understanding and adequately describing student behaviors.
