How Teachers Perceive Students’ Socioeconomic Background And Academic Performance In Charter Schools, Brittany Strickland

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Teachers represent the frontline of education and many of them find themselves working daily with impoverished students. Teachers’ qualitative perceptions are useful for developing solutions to the problem of educating diverse students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in charter schools. The purpose of this study was to understand teachers’ perceptions of a charter school environment and the association between low socioeconomic status (SES) students and their academic performance. A qualitative design and a case study methodology were used with two charter schools, including 45 participating teachers. Results from questionnaires and interviews ensured a sufficient understanding of the phenomenon. The collected information …

Leadership Theories And United States Demographic Shifts: Responsiveness In The Workplace, Sherry H. Latten, Jonathan Perez

Journal of Research Initiatives

As the United States becomes increasingly more diverse, it is imperative that organizations consider the implications of their leadership pipeline. Given the differences that can exist by social identity groups in experiences, values, interests, and communications, it raises a question about the responsiveness of current leadership theories to the changing demographics. This article explores the responsiveness of transformational leadership, authentic leadership, and leader-member exchange (LMX) theory to the demographic changes as a means of helping organizations consider how existing leadership norms and theories need to be expanded to encompass the future population of leaders across race, sex, and age.

Correlating Census Data With Boces Enrollment Demographics: A Study On The Need For Demographic Cohesion, Dana N. Roman Dec 2019

Correlating Census Data With Boces Enrollment Demographics: A Study On The Need For Demographic Cohesion, Dana N. Roman

Career & Technical Education Theses

BOCES was a public institution originally created in 1948 to enable smaller rural school districts to combine resources and funding. Pooling of resources allows for the creation of programs that would not otherwise be economically feasible due to low population density and funding gaps (boces.org). BOCES has evolved to include rural and larger school districts as well. Just as there is a need for the skills learned at BOCES to match industry demands, so too is there a need for the work-force diversity to be reflected in the student population at BOCES. To meet this need, BOCES administration must pay …

The Impact Of Demographics In The Equity Of Global Literacy Education, Saumendra Nath De

The Reading Professor

The right to education has been recognized as a basic human right in a number of international conventions including the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The issues of fairness, equal opportunity, and equity in education, however, continue to plague the educational world. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (2017), there are 750 million illiterate adults in the world, six out of ten children and adolescents are not learning globally, and low-income countries are home to a disproportionately large share of children and adolescents not learning. A plethora of demographic factors affects equity in education. This article discusses how …

An Investigation Of Patterns Between Demographic Characteristics Of Teachers And Grading Practices, Jenelle Lee

Prevalence And Demographics Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication (Aac) Users Birth-21: A Survey Of Speech-Language Pathologists Serving Learners With Complex Communication Needs (Ccn), Allison T. Phelps

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses a wide range of tools, technologies, and intervention techniques that aim to foster and advance communication competence in individuals with complex communication needs (CCN). The individuals who utilize AAC span a range of ages, diagnoses, and cultures—but little data exists regarding prevalence of AAC use and the true nature of the population’s heterogeneity. The purposes of this study were 1. to describe and analyze the population of pediatric AAC users (birth-21) in Missouri and 2. to evaluate the preparation speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have had to serve these learners. To gather this information, a survey …

Positive Veteran Teachers: Who Are They, And Where Are They To Be Found?, Geoffrey Lowe, Christina Gray, Peter Prout, Sarah Jefferson, Therese Shaw

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Teacher career trajectory studies have identified a small group of veteran teachers who remain positive and committed to teaching, while others become disenchanted or disengaged. These, and related studies suggest key characteristics of positive veteran teachers revolve around a strong sense of agency and professional identity including: 1) a continuing desire to experiment and embrace challenges; 2) high levels of personal comfort in their teaching roles; and 3) a willingness to take on leadership roles across a range of capacities and contexts, and in turn be affirmed in these roles. While studies describe these characteristics, there has been little attempt …
