This session will assist incoming students the relationship between underlying personal beliefs and emotional experiences (i.e. stress). Together, the students will articulate strategies to cultivate healthy habits to address stress. Briefly the the class will touch on consequences of unhealthy coping mechanisms. Finally, the students will discuss resiliency and how important the 8 dimensions of wellness are to strengthening their resilience.

Breaking the Silence: A Phenomenological Exploration of Secondary Traumatic Stress in U.S. College Student Affairs Professionals is a qualitative-intensive mixed methods study using phenomenology and art-based research techniques to uncover the essence of secondary traumatic stress in U.S. college student affairs professionals. Researchers in the fields of psychology, counseling, social work and other helping professions suggest that repeated exposure to individuals experiencing trauma, or hearing repeated details of an individual’s trauma, have negative outcomes on professional helpers. Values And Wellness As Related To A Positive School Orientation Among Japanese Adolescents, Naoko K. Shimada, Robyn S. Hess, R. Brett Nelson

The relationship between positive school orientation and the psychological factors of values and wellness were examined in a sample of 319 Japanese middle school students. Participants’ perceptions of wellness were consistently related to a reported sense of school bonding, but not necessarily to attendance or participation in extracurricular activities. The relationship between values and positive school orientation was less clear; values appeared to be more aligned with voluntary actions such as participation in extracurricular activities. Gender differences in student values were noted in that males placed more emphasis on extracurricular activities, while females placed more emphasis on attendance. Implications for …

Our goal with the present proposal is to bring modifications to the dining experience in Kimball Hall at the College of the Holy Cross, so to encourage a more well-rounded approach, which would best represent the values of continuous learning and education of the whole person and reflect the mission of the College. In order to meet these goals, we recommend five changes to Kimball dining , which we plan to implement during the Spring 2017 semester in collaboration with two Montserrat seminars.

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate the lived experiences of academic advisors who have master’s degrees in counseling in addressing wellness with college student-athletes. Of particular note was to explore if they addressed wellness and, if so, how they addressed wellness. Extant literature is replete with evidence documenting the numerous challenges and stressors student-athletes experience due to their athlete status.
