Wait…The Library Can Help Manage My Research Data?!?, Kelly A. Johnson
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Two New York University librarians, one dedicated to Research Data Management and the other a liaison to the Life Sciences, sought to understand why faculty underutilize the library’s RDM services. A simple survey revealed faculty’s RDM practices, needs, and attitudes, providing insight into how librarians can increase service along the research life cycle.

Fondren Library Research
The GWLA Student Learning Outcomes task force analyzed the data from over 42,000 first-time, first-year freshmen and over 1700 distinct courses from 12 research institutions to determine the impact(s) of information literacy instruction integrated into course curriculum on several student success measures.
Key findings include:
- Student retention rates are higher for those students whose courses include an information literacy instruction component.
- On average, First-Year GPA for students whose courses included information literacy instruction was higher than the GPA of students whose courses did not.
- Students exposed to library instruction interactions successfully completed 1.8 more credit hours per year than their …

Academic libraries have a mission that is intimately connected to the mission of the college or university, and institutional effectiveness is the means by which they measure their success at achieving that mission. Institutional effectiveness is also an essential part of maintaining a university’s regional accreditation and access to Title IV funds. In the Southern region of the United States, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College (SACSCOC) maintains regional accreditation for higher education institutions, and SACSCOC Comprehensive Standard (CS) 3.3.1 specifically addresses institutional effectiveness. To comply with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on …

National statistics indicate that academic libraries are experiencing declines in reference transactions, but the references services in some libraries continue to thrive. While many studies explore reasons that students do not seek assistance from librarians, there is limited research explaining why students do ask for help. The authors conducted a study to answer two questions: (1) How do undergraduate students look for information? (2) What prompted the students to seek out help from a librarian? To answer these questions, the authors conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students who had received reference assistance. An important theme that emerged from the …
Collaborative Online Catalogs And Open Access Repositories: How They Benefit Researchers, Michaela Eileen Volkmar, Deann Brame
Collaborative Online Catalogs And Open Access Repositories: How They Benefit Researchers, Michaela Eileen Volkmar, Deann Brame
DeAnn Brame
Libraries can help researchers in a multitude of ways, but we want to focus on two resources in particular that can benefit researchers: collaborative online catalogs and open access repositories. A collaborative online catalog is different from a traditional catalog, in that you can find materials beyond what your home library contains. You’ve probably heard about open access repositories, but did you know that your scholarship can be discovered by many if it’s located in an open access repository, such as Digital Commons at Winthrop?

Barrier To Learning: Why We Can No Longer Afford High Textbook Prices, Victoria Koger, Linda Sizemore
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The prohibitive costs of textbooks are affecting student success. We will start the session with an activity, then gauge audience experience on the issue before reviewing current research. The presenters will provide strategies on what libraries can and cannot do and facilitate discussion of proposed solutions and concerns about OER sources.

Accessibility Of Diverse Literature For Children In Libraries: A Literature Review, Renee I. Ting
Accessibility Of Diverse Literature For Children In Libraries: A Literature Review, Renee I. Ting
School of Information Student Research Journal
This literature review addresses the issues surrounding accessibility of culturally diverse children’s literature in libraries, including the importance of making diverse literature accessible, the availability of such titles on the market, library collection development of diverse books, and selection criteria among children. These issues, in sum, determine how many books are available to children, how they are made available, and if children will even choose to read them. The review shows that the data is unclear on many points regarding the benefits of diverse literature, though intuitive claims of the positive influence of such titles are not discounted. It also …

Participatory Action Research: Improving Professional Practices And Local Situations, Mary M. Somerville
Mary M. Somerville
Participatory Action Research employs social sciences research methods to develop actionable local knowledge. In seeking meaningful and inclusive ways of generating knowledge together in the workplace, Participatory Action Research practitioner–researchers combine action and reflection with theory and practice to improve local situations and enhance professional practices. Working with and for others, co-researchers evolve learning cycles that are practical and emergent, participatory and collaborative, emancipatory and democratic, and interpretive and local. In this case, the cyclical ‘methods in action’ orientation of Participatory Action Research is illustrated through examples from a North American academic library facility renovation initiative. Practical advice is offered …
