The Relationship Between Roles And Responsibilities Of Co-Teachers And Co-Teacher Self-Efficacy, Janet Van Heck
The Relationship Between Roles And Responsibilities Of Co-Teachers And Co-Teacher Self-Efficacy, Janet Van Heck
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study is a survey that was intended to measure the connection between what co-teachers actually do and what they think they should be doing as best practice. Second, it intended to study the roles and responsibilities that co-teachers report fulfilling. Finally, whether self-efficacy is a predictor of co-teacher roles and responsibilities is further reported.
Three hundred twenty co-teachers participated in the study: one hundred sixty special education and 160 general education teachers in a large urban school district in the southwestern United States. Bandura’s Teacher Self Efficacy Scale (1994) was used with a tool for co-teachers designed specifically for …
Co-Teaching And Its Effect On Student Growth, Troy Weiss
Co-Teaching And Its Effect On Student Growth, Troy Weiss
All Capstone Projects
With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1990 and again in 2004 Congress stated that students with special needs were to be educated in the least restrictive environment to the greatest extent possible. In order to meet the federal mandate many districts used co-teaching as a service delivery option for special needs students who are in a general education classroom. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of co-teaching on academic growth, particularly for students with an Individualized Education Plan. When reviewing the literature it was found that co-teaching has been studied and …
Using Discourse Analysis To Understand The Relationships And Practices Of Pre-Service Co-Teachers, Toni Strieker, Megan Adams, Woong Lim, Marcia Wright
Using Discourse Analysis To Understand The Relationships And Practices Of Pre-Service Co-Teachers, Toni Strieker, Megan Adams, Woong Lim, Marcia Wright
Georgia Educational Researcher
Early in 2016, the Council on Accreditation of Educator Providers (CAEP) (caepnet.org, 2016) published a new set of standards that called for increased collaboration of university-school partners by means of co-construction clinical experiences. In designing the new models, pre-service co-teaching, conducted by the teacher candidate and collaborating teacher, emerged as a promising practice in teacher education (Arshavskaya, 2014; Perry, 2016). However, even with the current enthusiasm for the establishing the new practices, a working definition of pre-service co-teaching remains elusive. Thus, the study of the voices of educators who are involved in co-teaching is essential as universities make the transition …
An International Immersion Into Co-Teaching: A Wake-Up Call For Teacher Candidates In General And Special Education, Kevin Oh, Wendy Murawski, Natalie Nussli
An International Immersion Into Co-Teaching: A Wake-Up Call For Teacher Candidates In General And Special Education, Kevin Oh, Wendy Murawski, Natalie Nussli
School of Education Faculty Research
This case study explored the short-term international co-teaching experience of pre-service general education teachers who were paired up with intern special education teachers (N = 8) to provide English language instruction to students in South Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants experienced their co-teaching. The narratives of two participants were chosen for phenomenological analysis, reflecting an overwhelmingly positive and a rather negative co-teaching experience. The key ingredients to a successful partnership were identified as open communication, the willingness to accept both positive and negative feedback, the willingness to learn from or get inspired by …

A Quantitative Study Of Co-Teaching As An Instructional Model To Serve Elementary Students, Susan M. Gerlach
A Quantitative Study Of Co-Teaching As An Instructional Model To Serve Elementary Students, Susan M. Gerlach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative study was to address the use of the co-teaching instructional model to serve elementary special education students in general educational classrooms. Recent trends and legislation have increased the use of inclusive education for students with disabilities. At this time, few large-scale studies on co-teaching have been conducted to date, and empirical research in terms of quantified student measured outcomes is limited. As a result, districts face challenges when considering implementation of a co-teaching model. This study used a quasi-experimental design from intact existing groups of fourth grade students on the State STAAR Reading test. Cross …

Comparing Formative And Summative Instruments: What Tools Inform Practice And Guide Teacher Candidate Decision Making?, Christina L. Wilcoxen
Comparing Formative And Summative Instruments: What Tools Inform Practice And Guide Teacher Candidate Decision Making?, Christina L. Wilcoxen
Student Work
With an increased focus on field-based preparation, the relationship between P12 school districts and universities has been forced to change with little or no support to create effective third space environments. The complexity of the student teaching experience is compounded by the need for redefined roles, the lack of a common lexicon and the incongruence of accreditation systems. A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods study was conducted to compare the use of formative and summative evaluation tools used to evaluate teacher candidates during student teaching. It also explored how the use of these two tools impacted the feedback provided and implemented …
Mitigating First Year Burnout: How Reimagined Partnerships Could Support Urban Middle Level Teachers, Stephanie Behm Cross, Clarice Thomas
Mitigating First Year Burnout: How Reimagined Partnerships Could Support Urban Middle Level Teachers, Stephanie Behm Cross, Clarice Thomas
Middle Grades Review
Given what we know about new teacher attrition—most teachers leave within their first five years in the field—specialized support during early years of teaching is critical. But should this support look different across different contexts and grade bands? What does supportive teacher education and induction look like for middle level educators preparing to teach in urban settings? This essay describes steps taken to design a cross-institutional, collaborative 3-year residency program for K-8 educators, and speaks to the importance of reimagined co-teaching, critical, and cross-institutional partnerships in middle grades teacher education. The authors urge readers to consider how to implement similar …
Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In The Middle School English Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Downey
Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In The Middle School English Language Arts Classroom, Joseph M. Downey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to investigate the perceptions of the co-teaching model in the middle school English Language Arts classroom. Data was kept over a three-week period and tracked through individual interviews with teachers in the English Language Arts department. Each interview included the same number of questions with the same prompts. These questions led teachers to discuss their experiences implementing co-teaching, working with a co-teacher and the time and effort that went into the process. As a result of the data collected, I was able to analyze the findings into specific themes including the roles and …
Barriers To Student Achievement, Dewey Hernandez
Barriers To Student Achievement, Dewey Hernandez
M.S.Ed. in Educational Leadership Research Projects
This mixed-methods study examined the impact of barriers on student achievement and how promising practices can overcome barriers and increase success. Results found that barriers impact success greatly, however, promising practices can help to overcome them. Significant findings included insights into the proficiency-based educational model, uncontrollable circumstances, and opportunities for students to provide evidence of learning in nontraditional ways. Recommendations consist of increasing paraprofessional training, bringing a bigger system of LCSW support, showing how to co-teach, and finding ways for inclusion to be solidly effective.
Middle School Administrator And Teacher Attitudes Towards Students With Mild To Moderate Disabilities In The Inclusive Classroom, William James Kimble
Middle School Administrator And Teacher Attitudes Towards Students With Mild To Moderate Disabilities In The Inclusive Classroom, William James Kimble
Education Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine middle school administrator and teacher attitudes towards inclusion in one local education agency (LEA) in North Carolina. Administrators and teachers from three middle schools were surveyed to determine factors that impact their attitude of inclusion with regard to years of experience, gender, extent working with students with disabilities, role in education, age, highest degree obtained, number of special education courses taken in college, and expected length in education. The Attitude Towards Teaching All Students Instrument (ATTAS-mm) was used for the quantitative portion of this study. The ATTAS-mm is organized into three components …
Examining The Efficacy Of Co-Teaching At The Secondary Level: Special Educators' Perceptions Of Their Productivity As Co-Teachers, Kera B. Ackerman
Examining The Efficacy Of Co-Teaching At The Secondary Level: Special Educators' Perceptions Of Their Productivity As Co-Teachers, Kera B. Ackerman
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
For decades, federal legislation has mandated the education of students with disabilities to be in their least restrictive environment. Nationally, this has resulted in more than 60% of students with disabilities receiving the majority (80%) of their education in the general education environment. To provide special education services in the general education environment, co-teaching, commonly defined as two educators with distinct expertise providing instruction in a common setting, is often used. The purpose of this non-experimental cross-sectional survey study was to examine special educators’ perceptions of their productivity in co-taught settings and the degree to which their perceptions were related …
Teacher Perceptions Of The Successful Implementation Of Co-Teaching Services, Vanna Raybould
Teacher Perceptions Of The Successful Implementation Of Co-Teaching Services, Vanna Raybould
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This project study addressed a lack of consistent instructional delivery of co-teaching practices in a rural high school in middle Georgia. Though co-teaching services are provided, teachers are not implementing co-teaching models with fidelity. Because co-teaching teams are not trained together, teachers' efficacy in the delivery of co-taught instruction has often been negatively affected. This project study provided insight into the perceptions of co-teachers regarding the implementation of co-teaching practices. Bandura's self-efficacy theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. Using a qualitative, bounded, single case study design, the study explored the perceptions of co-teachers and the planning practices …
Special Education Teachers' Voices On Co-Planning In A Suburban School District, Corinne Jeffers
Special Education Teachers' Voices On Co-Planning In A Suburban School District, Corinne Jeffers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited co-planning between special education and general education co-teaching partners has been documented in professional literature as a significant problem. Special education teachers do not adequately co-plan for the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities educated in the general education classroom. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze the perceptions of special education teachers in one suburban elementary school district in the United States regarding co-planning with regular education teachers. The theory of self-efficacy was utilized as the conceptual framework to understand how teachers' beliefs and experiences influenced planning and goal setting for special education students. …
