Strategies For Delivering Sexual Health Education To Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Integrative Review Of The Literature, Megan Harris
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurobiological condition leading to cognitive and social deficits within individuals on the spectrum. Adolescence is a time of intense physical and psychosocial changes that prove difficult for youth with ASDs. As families work through this transition they try to navigate teaching sexual health to their adolescent with an ASD. Teaching should be done to promote health, healthy relationships, and to prevent victimization. Yet, parents report that they lack the knowledge and support to complete this task. The purpose of this literature review was to synthesize research on strategies for teaching sexual health education to …
Roundtable – Teaching Human Rights: Challenges And Best Practices, Shayna Plaut, Kristi Kenyon, Joel Pruce, William Simmons
Roundtable – Teaching Human Rights: Challenges And Best Practices, Shayna Plaut, Kristi Kenyon, Joel Pruce, William Simmons
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Over the past 20 years, courses addressing human rights have grown dramatically at both the undergraduate and graduate levels worldwide. Many of these courses are housed in specific disciplines, focus on specific issues, and require practical experience in the form of internships/practicums. Amid this growth there is a need to reflect on teaching human rights including the challenges, fears, and best practices.
Recognizing that education takes place inside and outside a classroom, this roundtable brings together scholars teaching human rights in a variety of settings to examine the current state of university human rights education. This includes a discussion of …

Future Entrepreneurship Education For Students In China, Yang Song, Dafna Schwartz
International Symposium for Innovative Teaching and Learning
Due to the increasing needs of entrepreneurial activities in China, entrepreneurship education is becoming one of the most important topics for university students. This project reviews the current situation of Chinese entrepreneurship education and problems that exist. We focus on factors that influence the appropriateness of entrepreneurship studies to the needs and expectations of university students in China. We aim at discovering how to improve the entrepreneurial traits and business needs of the students from entrepreneurship studies. We aim at highlight the disparity between the supply and the expectations from entrepreneurship programmes in Chinese universities. Furthermore, we will compare the …

Eclipse Ballooning Stem Outreach For Elementary, Middle, And High School Education, Peter Henson, Fnu Anamika, Denise Buckner, Marissa Saad, Caitlin Nolby
2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
To promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education through ballooning, the North Dakota Space Grant Consortium (NDSGC) organizes an annual Near-Space Balloon Competition (NSBC) for students in grades 6 - 12. Students across the state of North Dakota have the opportunity to launch experiments into a near- space environment. The students learn how to write proposals, design payloads, and analyze data. They learn through an active, inquiry-based style that will prepare them for real-world engineering and critical thinking jobs. In 2016, NSBC proposed Great American Eclipse as the theme for the competition, thus the students were focused on designing …

From The Ground Up: Building A Student-Centered Digital Scholarship Program, Courtney Paddick, Carrie Pirmann, Justin Guzman, Rennie Heza, Minglu Xu
Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference
In Summer 2017, Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Student Research Fellows (DSSRF) program welcomed its inaugural cohort. DSSRF is a librarian-led program which introduces students to digital scholarship tools and methodologies, and equips them with the skills necessary to undertake an independent, digitally-based research project. In this presentation, co-facilitators Courtney Paddick and Carrie Pirmann will discuss how the idea of DSSRF was brought to fruition, lessons learned from the first year of the program, and the importance of collaboration (both on campus and interinstitutional) in facilitating a meaningful learning experience for students. Rennie Heza '18, Justin Guzman ‘19, and Minglu Xu ‘20, …
Improving Instructor Quality Using The Conversation Analytic Role-Play Method (Carm), William A. Tuccio Ph.D.
Improving Instructor Quality Using The Conversation Analytic Role-Play Method (Carm), William A. Tuccio Ph.D.
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The audience will learn about Stokoe’s Conversation Analytic Role-play Method (CARM) (http://www.carmtraining.org) and how it has been used to study and improve talk-in-interaction in professional settings. CARM is a proven, research-based methodology which collects large volumes of recorded audio and/or video particular to a professional setting and then uses detailed transcription and conversation analysis to identify systematic patterns of interaction and problems thereof. Actual excerpts from the dataset are appropriately anonymized and used by facilitators in a workshop setting to create authentic role-play.
The presentation will explain how CARM has been applied to help improve flight instructor teaching …
Generational Shift: Why We Should Modify Our Instructional Strategies For The Next Generations Of Aviators, Mary Niemczyk
Generational Shift: Why We Should Modify Our Instructional Strategies For The Next Generations Of Aviators, Mary Niemczyk
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Air transportation has proven to be an extremely safe, efficient and reliable means for travel – a testament to highly effective instruction and training. Airlines are forecasted to continue their rapid expansion over the next 20 years needing to hire more than 2 million aviation personnel (Boeing, 2015). As Baby Boomers retire, at the rate of 10,000 per day/4 million per year, a ‘generational replacement’ or shift will occur with Gen Y and Z members taking their places in the workforce.
Each generation is impacted by significant events during their developmental adolescent years. For Gen Y members, technological and K-12 …
Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke
Review Of Training Principles For Flight Training In Aircraft Or Simulator, Stefan Kleinke
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
In human-performance-driven fields such as the social and behavioral sciences and education, there is a particular risk for a disconnect between current research and applied practice. Often, new findings require policy changes and workforce re-education before being applied in a meaningful way. Therefore, a continuous need for practitioner professional development and continuation training exists to ensure informed practices. This presentation is motivated by these needs and aims to help flight training professionals to make informed decisions when designing and conducting flight training events. Based on a conceptual framework of cognitive and behavioral theories in learning, a variety of common training …
The Evidence-Based Approach To Learning, Jon Lars Syversen
The Evidence-Based Approach To Learning, Jon Lars Syversen
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
The aviation industry has focused on assessment of non-technical skills and human factors for decades. The ICAO Doc 9995, the IATA EBT implementation guide, authorities and operators are moving towards an evidence-based approach to training and assessment. This presentation will address practical and methodological challenges the FTO’s and instructors are facing when also aiming for evidence-based learning.
A core issue is that performance in the simulator should be addressed by integrating assessment of technical and non-technical skills. Secondly, this assessment regime should be compatible to instructor’s working conditions; usually running the simulator while having observation as a main task. Thirdly, …
