An Urban Institute Community Outreach Program: The Changing Faces Of Pharmacy - A Student Enrichment Program, Manouchkathe Cassagnol, Vibhuti Arya, John Conry
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Pharmacists serve as important resources for health and medication-related questions to many communities across various demographics, races and ethnicities throughout the U.S. This is particularly true for a place as diverse as New York City (NYC). The Changing Faces of Pharmacy-Student Enrichment Program has provided mentoring services and education to a growing cohort of high school students through the active participation of our Pharm.D. students. We will look to create strategic alliances that will provide broader services and support to this group of students, including financial and academic aspects. We will also look to develop partnerships to find STEM focused …

Pastoral Leadership Experiences And Organizational Outcomes In Contemporary Catholic Communities: The Clerical Perspective, Justin Mathias Udomah
Theses & Dissertations
This interpretive qualitative study explored pastoral leadership experiences of 8 Catholic priests serving in the Central Texas area of the United States. The purpose was to understand what their pastoral experiences meant for them as religious leaders and how their various perspectives would portray pastoral leadership in the 21st century Church. Participants were Catholic priests with 5 to 25 years’ experience in the ministry serving as fulltime pastors in parishes. Data collection was through open-ended interviews conducted in conducive locations. One general question was asked that enabled participants to tell their stories about their pastoral experiences since ordination. These were …
A Professional Learning Community With An Arabian Twist, Christine Ann Roy
A Professional Learning Community With An Arabian Twist, Christine Ann Roy
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This paper discusses how a western approach to a Professional Learning Community (PLC) can be implemented in an eastern setting, without taking out the essence of the culture. It is based on personal observations of how a community functions within a culture. This study seeks to explore the steps to implementing a structured PLC in which the already existing community produces empowered teachers who will be life-long learners. It describes the beginning stages of executing a PLC by enabling ordinary teachers to facilitate professional development meetings at a local, private school in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Identifying The Key Components Of Place-Conscious Pedagogy To Help Maximize Rural Potential, Amber Marie Dlugosh
Identifying The Key Components Of Place-Conscious Pedagogy To Help Maximize Rural Potential, Amber Marie Dlugosh
MSU Graduate Theses
By using reflective and observational data from a rural high school English classroom's endeavor to launch a community-wide online literary magazine, this study uncovers the key components of place-conscious curriculum and instruction that must be present for benefits to transpire. Focusing on a rural, predominantly-caucasian school district, the study tracks 64 students who were enrolled in four sections of a senior-level writing course. Previous research asserts that place-conscious curriculum choices that involve student contributions to the community prove to have significant potential for rural schools. The investigator observed a significant decrease in student apathy, academic gains within the content area, …

"That's Empowering!": The Influence Of Community Activism Curriculum On Gifted Adolescents' Self-Concepts, Ashley D. Beason-Manes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The first of the following manuscripts addresses the experiences of a group of gifted middle school students as they engaged in community action projects that provided them opportunity to become activists in their school, neighborhood, and larger community. This study pays special attention to participants’ self-concepts as measured by the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Children (2012) and through participant interviews. The study finds evidence of students’ co-cognitive components of giftedness when themes of courage, sensitivity to human concerns, and sense of destiny are applied. Main themes from Harter’s scale are also applied, and participant interviews reveal evidence of academic and …
Civic Education Training Promotes Active Learning With Real-World Outcomes, Becci Burchett Gauna, Michelle Paul
Civic Education Training Promotes Active Learning With Real-World Outcomes, Becci Burchett Gauna, Michelle Paul
SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement
The teaching of history is moving away from the rote memorization of textbooks and toward the development of civic skills. Illinois’ recent decision to require all students to complete a semester-long civics course brings us a step closer to measuring active citizenship. Typically harbored under the social studies umbrella, civics is now a stand-alone course. The state mandates that each civics course include service learning, controversial conversation, instruction regarding government institutions and procedures, and simulations.
Embedding Service In Teacher Education, Becky Kreidler
Embedding Service In Teacher Education, Becky Kreidler
SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement
This reflective piece investigates the meaning behind engaging in community service in the context of pre-service teachers, specifically through Loyola University’s Future Teachers Club. Much research has been conducted looking at the effects and the importance of engaging in service for pre-service educators’ development in the profession, but few have directly examined the content of that service and how meaningful those experiences were. Through personal transformative moments, such as listening to Father Greg Boyle’s understanding of service and living with a L’Arche community, I explore how one’s understanding of community connections and involvement is just as, if not more, significant …
What Makes An Excellent Teacher?, Steven M. Fettke
What Makes An Excellent Teacher?, Steven M. Fettke
Selected Faculty Publications
Everyone who attends any place of education on any level wants an “excellent” teacher; however, is that word —“excellence”— ethereal, mystical, or just entirely subjective? In this essay I wish to propose a definition of what excellent teaching entails by referring to the spiritual and social formation of the teacher. Central to my thinking is how the work of the Holy Spirit affects “excellence.” Reflecting on my long years of experience teaching in a Pentecostal college/university and as someone in pursuit of “excellence” in my own teaching, I think I have something to say about it which involves teachers, students, …

James K. Wu, M.D.
This community profile report provides information about the Aboriginal population of the Illawarra Region. It is intended to begin a discussion about how research can contribute to the social health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. The report highlights disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians that are apparent not only in the health statistics but also in almost every key socioeconomic indicator. However the report is not just about ill-health and disadvantage. The Illawarra region has numerous well-established Aboriginal-controlled organisations which provide important leadership and social health and wellbeing services for Aboriginal people, many of which have survived within the region …

Sustainable Hub For Education And Demonstration, Daniel N.C. Smith
MAIS Projects and Theses
In our lives we are routinely confronted with images of climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation. The Sustainable Hub for Education and Demonstration (SHED) reflects my personal commitment to action in confronting this seemingly overwhelming problem. The structure embodies the practice of green building and makes connections among education, resource conservation, service learning, and community action. As a demonstration of resource conservation, the SHED was designed to be recycled, reused, or repurposed at the end of its service life. The materials of the structure will be reincarnated in another use cycle and no deposits will be made to a …
