Cyberbullying In Rural Communities: Origin And Processing Through The Lens Of Older Adolescents, Lisa Reason, Michael Boyd, Casey Reason
Cyberbullying In Rural Communities: Origin And Processing Through The Lens Of Older Adolescents, Lisa Reason, Michael Boyd, Casey Reason
The Qualitative Report
The experiences of older adolescent cyberbullying victims from a rural community were explored in this qualitative study. Findings revealed that cyberbullying originates primarily as the result of jealousy over romantic relationships and cultural, religious, or sexual orientation intolerance. Participants also indicated that cyberbullies tend to be more brazen and cruel as the result of perceived anonymity. In addition, participants reported feelings of helplessness and rage in response to the attacks. Finally, participants suggested that the lack of knowledge and understanding of cyberspace resulted in a lack of emotional support and protection against cyberbullying.

Free To Be: One Charter School's Approach To Supporting Gender And Sexual Minority Students, Katherine Sieger
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation presents three and a half years of ethnographic data from an “LGBT” charter school. It explores how gender and sexuality appear within educational spaces and how providing students an anti-heteronormative inclusive education impacts a student’s sense of self. I show how critical pedagogy is deployed as an anti-heteronormative approach to supporting all students. The term anti-heteronormative is used to express an explicit rejection of heterosexism and genderism, acknowledging the complex oppressive factors that develop given the normative expectations of gender and sexuality and the impact such expectations have on all bodies and all students. Findings reveal how the …

An Oral History Of Homophobic Bullying In All-Deaf Schools And Mainstream Schools: The Experiences Of Deaf Lesbian And Gay Persons, Andrew D. Biskupiak
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Deaf lesbian and gay individuals encounter homophobic bullying when receiving their high school education at all-deaf and/or mainstream schools, yet their experiences of homophobic bullying continue to be insufficiently documented and reported in the existing literature. Using oral history interviews with ten deaf lesbian (n=4) and gay students (n=6) attending Gallaudet University, this report documents the interviewees’ personal narratives of homophobic bullying in high school and examines the prevalence and impact of verbal and physical abuses as two forms of homophobic bullying. Patterns involve geographic location and public versus private mainstream schools. Further research could address types of mainstream schools; …

Supporting Anti-Bullying In Church Environments- A Program Evaluation Study, Trisha Wetzelberger
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Existing literature demonstrates the need for anti-bullying programs in the traditional school setting, however, only a limited number of studies have included the need or benefits to having anti-bullying programs in the church community. The theories of Kohlberg, Erikson, and Fowler served as the basis for building an understanding of the development of bullying behaviors among children. Dan Olweus, the man known as the pioneer of bullying prevention research, addressed the importance of including the total community in a successful bullying prevention program. He was referring to including everyone associated with children in the school community: teachers, parents, administration, and …

Bully Victimization, Depression, And The Role Of Protective Factors Among College-Age Lgbtq Students, Theresa E. Bhoopsingh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examined the prevalence and impact (or intensity) of four different bullying-victimization forms (physical, verbal, relational, cyber) as experienced by the LGBTQ college-age population. In addition, this study also investigated LGBTQ college students’ bully victimization experiences and their links to depressive symptomatology. The relationship between self-rated victimization and its impact and depression was also explored. Furthermore, given the potential for protective factors of various types to mitigate the negative impact of bullying, this study investigated social supports from family, friends, and campus to determine the strength of their moderating effects, individually and in combination, for each of the sexual …

The Perceived Impact On Bullying Of The Second Step Program At A Kindergarten-8th Grade School: A Program Evaluation, Adam J. Thorns
Dissertations
This program evaluation examines the Second Step program at Baker School, a Kindergarten through 8th grade building located in Hillsborough, Illinois. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine the perceptions of impact the Second Step program has had on bullying at the school. The study employs a mixed-methods approach involving surveys and interviews with students, educators, and parents. This researcher determined that although bullying does not appear to be prevalent at Baker School, there is inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of the Second Step program. Major themes that emerged from this evaluation were a wide range of student …

"The film Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History (Brummel & Sharp 2010) is the true life story of Jamie Nabozny. The film documents the bullying that Jamie endured for years. Bullied is a free resource provided by the Southern Poverty Law Center and their anti-bias education project, Teaching Tolerance, available for order at www.tolerance.org. Narration of the movie is done by Jane Lynch; well known for her role as the narcissistic cheerleading coach on Glee. Lynch’s uncharacteristically somber tone, only serves to punctuate the seriousness of the movie’s topic."--From the article.

The purpose of this study was to examine the 2011 New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (NJAB) and its perceived impact on urban school districts. Through a series of interviews with 16 participants from three urban school districts in New Jersey, the researcher sought to examine if those charged with implementing the NJAB have deemed the law and its requirements effective. The interviews were conducted with NJAB- mandated Anti-Bullying Specialists for each of the schools that participated in the study. The Anti-Bullying Specialists are the staff members in each school who are responsible for the implementation of the NJAB, …

One Child's Story Of School-Experienced Isolation And Rejection, Gloria J. Gresham Dr.
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Abstract
For twelve years of school, a tiny girl endured isolation and rejection from her peers most likely due to a physical abnormality. As the girl remembers, the educators in a small, rural school district did little to support her as she was ostracized by her classmates and encourage other children to practice compassion. At times, the educators even participated in the rejection of the child. This is the story of a tiny, brown-eyed little girl who experienced isolation and rejection time and time again.
Keywords: isolation, rejection, bullying, abuse

Am I A Bully? A Mixed Methods Phenomenological Study Of The Perspectives And Experiences Of Girls Who Are Relationally Aggressive, Laura A. Hogarth
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This explanatory mixed-methods, phenomenological study investigated how relationally aggressive females perceive and experience their social world. The first, quantitative phase of the study included 237 students (85 males, 152 females) in grades 6 to grade 8 from four different schools. All students completed the quantitative measures of the study; a peer nomination scale of relational aggression, the Basic Empathy Scale (Joliffe & Farrington, 2006), and a self-concept measure, the Self-Description Questionnaire Short Form (Marsh et al., 2005). Female students whose mean relational aggression score was greater than 1 SD about the class mean, and received votes from more than 30% …

Perceptions Of A Prescribed Intervention, Daniel J. Dooley
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In response to New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act of 2011, districts and schools have been held responsible for strengthening the standards and procedures for preventing, reporting, investigating, and responding to incidents of harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying; consequently, the State has offered little guidance on how to be proactive in preventing instances of bullying in a way the law would support. In response to this legislative mandate, I have created a self-designed intervention, based upon the Five Core Competencies of Social and Emotional Learning, intended to negate at-risk social behaviors including bullying in a subpopulation of fifth through eighth …
Gender Differences In Bullying And Perceptions Of Bullying, Melanie S. Brzezinski
Gender Differences In Bullying And Perceptions Of Bullying, Melanie S. Brzezinski
Theses and Dissertations
Bullying is a prevalent and ongoing problem in all schools from elementary school on through college. Previous research has shown that rates of bullying have been on the rise in recent years. High rates of bullying should not be ignored as involvement in bullying can lead to long-lasting, negative effects. To decrease or prevent bullying, anti-bullying methods should consider all potential factors. An important factor in bullying research is the influence of gender on one’s overall bullying experience. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether or not there is a difference in the bullying rates and styles …

Teacher Bullies Or Frustrated Teachers? How The Classroom Environment Affects The Teacher-Student Relationship, Susan P. Mcmillan-Quilantan
Ed.D. Dissertations
This quantitative research study examined the issue of teacher-student bullying behavior as perceived by third through eighth grade teachers in three suburban schools to determine if there was any relationship between teacher bullying behavior and an inclusive classroom setting. Two survey instruments were used, the Survey of Teachers’ Attitudes toward Inclusion (Cochran, 1998), and the Survey on Bullying Teachers and Teacher Bullying (Twemlow, Fonagy, Sacco, & Brethour, 2006). The results indicated there is a statistically significant difference between special education teachers’ and general education teachers’ attitudes toward inclusive classrooms. The results also indicated that teacher bullying occurs across settings by …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine the effectiveness of an anti-bullying intervention called Cognitive Rehearsal Training (CRT) using a workshop format to increase third year nursing students’ knowledge and confidence to address bullying behaviour. A lanyard card identifying ten common bullying behaviours and possible phrases to stand up to bullying was used as a tool to Stop! Reflect! and Respond! as a process to resolve conflict (Griffin, 2004; Griffin & Clark, 2014). Although similar bullying interventions have been studied among practicing nurses, few studies exist that involve students within their pre-licensure training program (Iheduru-Anderson, 2014; Thomas, 2010) …

Bullying represents a substantial issue facing Canadian youth, and is associated with negative outcomes across domains of function throughout the lifespan. Despite significant literature examining bullying involvement among adolescents in Canada, a paucity of research explores the bullying experiences of First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) youth. This is particularly concerning, as these youth may be at higher risk for bullying and its related consequences due to the cultural marginalization and systemic inequalities experienced by Indigenous peoples nationwide. The present study aims to address this gap in the literature, examining the bullying experiences of FNMI youth, the effects of these …
Bullying Prevention And Intervention In Education Through The Visual Arts: An Instrumental Case Study, Eugene Neglia
Bullying Prevention And Intervention In Education Through The Visual Arts: An Instrumental Case Study, Eugene Neglia
Theses and Dissertations
According to the American Educational Research Association (AERA) (2013) bullying is one of the greatest health risks to children and young adults in the United States. It is harmful in its impact to the victim, the bystander, and the bully and is often less visible and less identifiable than other public health concerns. The effects on victims, offenders, and bystanders can be long lasting and can affect an individual’s development (AERA, 2013).
The impact of bullying on education is profound. As a result of bullying, a child’s academic achievement can be greatly affected (Petrosino, Guckenburg, & DeVoe, 2010). As mandated …

This essay addresses an evidence-based action project that sought to interrupt and transform bullying behaviors directed at South Asian American youth in schools in the United States (U.S.). In the context of this essay and project, the authors argue that larger macro-level forces that promote misinformation about youth who inhabit brown bodies (in the U.S. and abroad) have given rise to behaviors identified as bullying, and in some cases, harassment and hate crimes in schools. Conventional literature on bullying offers inadequate frames for how the forces of Islamophobia—that affect all those perceived to be Muslim—and bullying come together to shape …

This research examined the ways in which person-level factors (social goals, self-efficacy for defending, moral disengagement, and empathy) influence bullying and bystander experiences of middle school students. Participants (N = 207) in grades 6 to 8 (ages 11- to 15-years-old) who were enrolled in a suburban Public School Academy (i.e., charter school) middle school located in Southeastern Michigan completed a self-report questionnaire on one occasion. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed gender and grade differences in person-level factors. Gender differences were found for victimization. Females experienced significantly more social victimization than males. Multiple regression analyses revealed a synergistic effect for some, …

Bullying has become a worldwide problem of pandemic proportion and degree. (Thomas, Bolen, Heister & Hyde, 2010). In the United States over thirty-five percent of school-aged students were directly involved in bullying incidents. Tragic news stories about suicides and school violence raised awareness about the importance of addressing this global issue (Van Der Zande, 2010). To date reports further indicate that more females are involved in indirect relational bullying than males. Unfortunately, as technology becomes more and more accessible, relational bullying has become one of the fastest growing epidemics (Brinson, 2005; Rigby & Smith, 2011).
Current research explanations were limited …

In Tennessee, a majority of students who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) do not feel safe due to bullying and harassment that is targeted toward them by their peers. Schools, such as MTS school (a pseudonym), are not required to specify protection for LGBT students, causing the LGBT bullying to continue without being reported and resulting in higher absences, lower achievement, greater mental health issues, and in some cases, suicidal ideation among LGBT students. Through confidential personal interviews that were transcribed and coded, this case study's purpose was to better understand how MTS adult stakeholders perceive (a) …

School violence has gained attention in recent years with the rise of aggressive behavior in schools across the United States. With increased understanding of this problem, school district administrators might implement prevention strategies or assess current school violence policies and programs. Using the conceptual framework of general strain theory, a case study was conducted in an urban school district in the northeastern United States that was experiencing increased student violence. The purpose of this case study was to explore teachers' perceptions of school violence to increase the understanding of the problem at the study site. All certified teachers in the …
